Village Board Meeting Tonight

7:30 P.M. in the Library

11-9-2016

Please remember to fly a flag on 11-11. Nearly all the 53 cemeteries

in Otoe County have veterans buried there. Many have no relatives

left in the area, so why not consider "adopting" one? Our family has

done this for William "Billie" Massie, buried in the Unadilla Cemetery,

who was killed in WWI. If that name sounds familiar, he is half the

namesake of Massie-Richards American Legion Post #100

in Syracuse.

Join us for coffee and cookies on Friday morning, November 11,

in the Veterans Room at the Community Center. The History Room

will also be open; the Village Office will be closed.

We still have a couple spots available in the barn quilt classes. Come join the fun. Classes are scheduled for this Saturday, November 12th, 9 to 11:30 AM or next Tuesday, November 15th, 7 to 9:30 PM.If interested, stop in the library or contact Sue Saathoff at 402-269-5748.

Bob and I enjoyed four wonderful days in Oklahoma last week.

In Oklahoma City, we stayed in "Bricktown" and loved it. We saw

the Oklahoma City National Memorial during the day, and going

back after dark. Both times were truly sad and moving.

We examined every piece of Chihuly glass at the Oklahoma

Museim of Art, even the chandelier hanging by the cafeteria.

What an amazing artist he is!

There's also the Chickasaw baseball arena, Mickey Mantle's

Steakhouse (couldn't get in), Jazmoz Bourbon Street Bar,

Flamingo Lips Alley, the Banjo Museum, Johnny Bench

Boulevard, and Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar & Grill",

just to name a few!

Then it was on to Claremore for the Will Rogers Festival. The

people of that state sure know how to honor someone. The Museum

is huge and filled to the brim with his memorabilia. You can hear

his radio broadcasts and watch him in a movie. He and some

of his family are buried on the grounds, which takes the term

"manicured" to a whole new level. Wonder what he would think

about that!

Many of you know I'm fond of geneology and the family of

Rogers' is traced back several generations.

And there was a classic car show in the parking lot. Two that

really impressed us was the futuristic "Avanti" made by

Studebaker,

and a deluxe model of a Pierce-Arrow, complete with matching

travel trunk mounted above the back bumper.

We drove down Patti Page Boulevard to get to our hotel, and in

the parking lot were several trucks from 83 County (Burwell) in

town for the rodeo. Those guys sure know how to tailgate!

Sometimes you have to go somewhere else to truly appreciate

where you live; for example, Wal-Mart can not sell beer in Oklahoma!

Wouldn't have missed this trip for anything, but it was sure nice

to get home to our own bed.

Please note: The Village is raising the water and sewer rates

effective January 1, 2017. Letters were mailed out last week.

your family!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

living in_the_past_lane

Friday, 11-10-1916, The Otoe Union:

Guila Darling was teaching school at Ceresco. Democrats

were the big winners in Otoe County. Charles Buchanan was

the new owner of the Unadilla (Meat) Market; "Fresh and

Salt Meats at all time." Publisher of the Palmyra Items,

W.C. Griffen, sold the paper back to C.A. Sweet, Jr., and

"quit the newspaper field."

Greenblatt & Seay's Schoolhouse Performance Series features a concert of Scandinavian music on Sunday, November 13, at 2:30 PM, in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse.  Greenblatt & Seay and Friends will be playing a variety of instruments, including fiddle, guitar, hammered dulcimer, recorders, pennywhistles, and the nyckelharpa.  The nyckelharpa is the official keyed fiddle of Sweden, and has 16 strings.

Greenblatt & Seay have been playing and singing together since the night they met, decades ago.  Their performance on November 13 will include the championship fiddling styles of Deborah Greenblatt, and the fancy whistle-playing of David Seay.

The concert will be downstairs in the 1925 brick schoolhouse, and  followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers.  Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur,  one mile south of Highway 34.

Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $1.00 for children. Seating is limited. For more information, write to Greenblatt & Seay, The Old Schoolhouse, P.O.
