Happy Easter 2 495

It was hard to get an accurate count, but we think there were 400+ folks at the Benefit for Andrew Kimbell. SO many items in the Silent Auction and then there was a live auction, which included a kayak!

It was great to see old friends and residents who came back for the event, and the support everyone gave to Andrew and Courtney.

Don't know for sure who all the organizers and helpers were, but they did an amazing job! So many are ready to write the next generation off, but Saturday night proved we're in good hands. Hats off to all of you.

MARCH MADNESS MEMORIES

By Renowned Investigative Cub & Sports Reporter, Bob Wilhelm

The other day the conversation at the prestigious Paisley Bottom Coffee Shop and Critical Thinking Laboratory got around to basketball and the madness that occurs every March with the state high school, college conference, and NCAA tournaments. Our elder, John, spoke of years gone by and suggested that he may very well be the only Palmyra alumni that played basketball in a state tournament (1952) and then coached in a state basketball tournament (1962).

Not that our members aren't trustworthy, but when one's reputation is on the line, due dilligence is necessary. So, I jumped on Al Gore's World Wide Web to see what I could find. Sure enough, in the March 10, 1952, edition of the Nebraska City newspaper, there was an article headline "Palmyra Faces Pleasanton First" in the Class D bracket. The Palmyra players were Wayne Copes, Eddie Golden, Lyman Hill, Richard Hull, Kent Lanning, Warren Lashley, Martin Read, Richard Reimer, Johnny Stilwell, and Jimmie Strodtman. The coaches were Gary Thomson and Bill Weatherhogg. Pleasanton won this matchup. I am not sure, but perhaps this is where the phrase "one and done" originated. But in any event, it was an accomplishment to reach state. In the March 28, 1952 edition, an article headline reported "Chamber honors Palmyra Teams". Herman Rohrig, a Lincoln sporting goods salesman, and Dick Decker, sports editor for the Lincoln State Journal, were guest speakers when the Palmyra Chamber of Commerce entertained the basketball and volleyball teams. Superintendent, Bernard Davis, introduced the players.

In the February 20, 1962, edition of the Nebraska City newspaper, we found an article listing Murdock with a 20-1 record, as heading to the state tournament. It did not mention John as coaching but he has briefly mentioned it on one or two occasions, that he coached Murdock and was at the helm when they went to state (google ad nauseam). Palmyra lost to DeWitt in the first round. DeWitt went on to take 2nd place.

An interesting article from March 12, 1962, reported "Fans in Fist Fights". After the frenzied finish to the Class A battle, most of the 10,000 fans present engaged in at least 8 fist fights before the campus and Lincoln police were able to "chase the crowd out of the coliseum."

Enjoy the season and hope your brackets were winners!
