Apples at the community garden. This garden is about to reap a bountiful
harvest of apples. Shown are semi dwarf trees and they are loaded. The middle
tree out of these five is designated as the community tree for sampling by everyone.
Pick enough for a pie or just grab one to eat as you're going by. Check the ground
in case some good ones have just fallen. Picking starts after Labor Day!!!

Monday, August 19, our district representative in the Nebraska Legtislature,
Julie Slama, visited the Unadilla Community Center and visited with folks from the
area in the Community Library.

Continued get well wishes to Lee Clark and Nina Rohlfs.
Last week Bob and I traveled to Humboldt, NE, to view the Southeast Nebraska
Memorial Cancer Garden in Humboldt. What a hidden treasure!

The place is just amazing! Well planned and well kept, it honors so many folks
who have struggled with or lost their lives to cancer. And provides shelters
for quiet reflection or conversations. If you group hasn't made the trip, it is well
worth the price of a tank of gas.

We've been seeing hummingbirds again - maybe they never left?

Condolences to the family and friends of Amanda (Pieper) Stoner, who passed
8-14. She was the wife of Hadsell Stoner, and will be laid to rest in the Unadilla
Cemetery beside him.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 8-22-1919, The Otoe Union:
An ad for the Farmer's State Bank stated "We are now open for business. Our
motto is: Safety, Strength, Service." The capital stock was $15,000. Officers were:
G.W. Darner, President, S.E. Darner, Vice President, C.O. Darner, Cashier, and
E.R. Darner, Asst. Cashier. (Would love more information on these folks!) Due to
the scarcity of ice, O.G. Stoner "put in a first class line of groceries" in the
meat market.
