What a beautiful day for a celebration! All the vendors were doing a brisk business by 9 a.m. There were some regulars and some new ones.
The Resource, History and Veterans Rooms had visitors all morning, and Corey Schulze delighted the children (and some grownups) with his trains. Thanks to Louise Vedder for her help in the Resource Room. The Library gave away free children's books and had a nice selection of books on their table. Thanks to Sue Saathoff for organizing the vendors. Thanks to Donna Crownover, Glenda Willnerd and Maureen Vogt for manning the raffle and silent auction. And a big thank you to the Better Beef Producers 4-H Club for serving lunch to the public. Lots of good comments on the food!

The Humanities Nebraska Speaker this year was Jeff Barnes and he shared his research on Jesse James, which confirms James was in Southeast Nebraska quite a bit. The only photo of him in a suit and looking dapper, was taken at a photo studio in Nebraska City. The funds for the clothing and shave were provided by a banker named Enyart, also in Nebraska City. He debunked a few theories and gave lots of new information. There were 150+ people in the bleachers just for his presentation, maybe our largest crowd ever!d (Thanks to Perry Stoner and Bob Wilhelm for your technical help.)

The Methodist Church also provided a noon meal, as did the Boy Scouts at the Duncan Building (they completely sold out of food). Nina Jean Rohlfs, what a trooper you are. She again provided music and the Nebraska Nut Growers were also represented and report their best day ever.

Then came the Grand Marshall, Tom Grafton, escorted by the "Groundhog Falcon". Grafton declared that he has chosen Unadilla as one of his top 3 locations for his vacation home. He also stated his favorite sandwich is Spam on wheat bread with butter; obviously a "true believer" of the groundhog.

In all there were 57 parade entries. The Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts tied for 1st place, and Wilhelm Family Farms "Drone Protection Services, came in second. (You look good in tin foil Marcus!)

Having a little fun with the drone stories from a few weeks ago!
Thanks so much to Dave Hall, Nathan Bischoff and Mark Czapla for lining up the parade entries and keeping things running smoothly. Thanks also to John Moss, Jason Newby and their friends for delighting us with your classic cars.

And a huge thank you to Perry Stoner and family for announcing the parade. There were over 600 in attendance - probably our largest crowd ever!

Then it was off to The Bar for the King and Queen Coronation. Thanks so much to Arliss & Rick Wassenberg for hosting this event, because folks, it just gets crazy in there with all the people! This year's winners were Brett Dettmer and Jan Eisenhauer Moore, crowned by Gov. Pete Ricketts and witnessed by last year's royalty, Jack Stilwell and Rachel Zeiger Ruehling. Once again the candidates broke the record and raised $12,500. Their secret weapon: the Sprunza! Great job all of you. We would like to thank everyone who donated in support of this great cause; the money helps fund the Fire Dept., the Rescue Squad and the Unadilla Area Fund.

And back again and becoming a tradition in their own rite: Randy Baker, John Moss and Pat Glen You guys rock!
Thanks so much to Corinne Zahn and the town board for their support and help; and to Dwight Kastens and Arlin Rohlfs who work behind the scenes. Problems are different each and every year, but after 32 years, we got this! As I say every year, this event "takes a village: and almost everyone in our little village participates in one way or the other. Thank you seems hardly enough, but thank you anyway. We had a great time and we hope to see you next year on Saturday, February 6, 2021. put us on your calendar now!

Sunday morning at 7 a.m. the groundhog faithful gathered for breakfast; head cook: Lynn Schomerus. At 7:35, Unadilla Bill saw his shadow and declared 6 more weeks of winter. Don't put those hats and scarves away just yet. The food and conversation were great and we closed the book on another groundhog celebration. Time to start planning for next year!

Unadilla Bill predicts 6 more weeks of winter!
Thanks so much to Donna & Wesley Deurksen for their more than generous donation to the Unadilla Cemetery. Donna has roots in the area and they came all the way from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to hear the Jeff Barnes presentation. Always enjoy our visits Donna!
Thanks to Vicki Parde for her donation to the Unadilla Community Center. It is most appreciated!

Get well wishes to Chuck Bjork and Milton Leefers.
