Hello May 500

VILLAGE BOARD MEETING TONIGHT (Wednesday)

7:30 P.M., in the Village Library

 Its a girl 300

Congratulations to Vincent & Jessica Hinrichsen on the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth Dale. She was born May 4, 7 lbs. 13 oz., and was 20 1/4" long. Siblings are Charlotte, age 7, Gus, age 5, and Caroline, age 3. Grandparents are: Dale & Patty Hinrichsen, Burr, NE, and Randy & Karhryn Geier, Wauneta, NE. She's a cutie!

 Thank you 3

Thanks to Dennis & Diane Connot for their generous donation to the Unadilla Cemetery in memory of Lillie P. Rochenbach. It is most appreciated.

Also thanks to the Lincoln Food Bank, which serves Southeast Nebraska, the Nebraska National Guard, Janet Oelke, Corinne Zahn, and Bob Wilhelm, for distributing food at the Unadilla Park. It was most welcome by those attending. They told us our park was ideal for this kind of event, as it worked so well with the one-way traffic and it wasn't blocking any major streets.

We had an interesting trip on Mother's Day. First we stopped on the west side of Syracuse and looked at the big pile of old spikes. The railroad is replacing ties between Unadilla and Syracuse, and we just assumed they re-used them but they don't.

Then we traveled towards Nebraska City and took #75 North as we hadn't been on that road for several years. At Plattsmouth we headed west and did a tour of Cedar Creek, which has really grown! And then north to the National Cemetery. Always in awe at the precision in which they lay out the stones. They have had so many burials already.

We noticed between Springfield and the cemetery, there is a population sign for Papillion. Wow, how did Papillion get to Hwy #50? Omaha is getting closer all the time!

The best part of the day: I had my husband's undivided attention and we actually talked about things other than the Corona virus!!!

Saturday, we were able to watch our granddaughter's graduation ceremony on Facebook. We were in awe of the planning and cooperation this must have taken, but what a sweet ending to such a bizarre senior year. They'll remember 2020 for SO many reasons! Kudos to the organizers, you did an amazing job and these grandparents, who are trying to "stay safe" can never thank you enough.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

 Man reading newspaper 250

Friday, 5-14-1920, The Otoe Union:

A correction was printed from the week before: Urma Dean, daughter of William Dean, and Louis Jansen (not Johnson), son of George Jansen, were married in Lincoln. Elmer Finigan resigned his position at the Syracuse bank for a similar one in Newport Beach, California. Esther (Westmiller) DuBois, wife of Theodore, died and was buried in the Unadilla cemetery. Draft horses were in major demand; horses weighing 1700 lbs. or over were bringing $275-$450. The high price of sugar had farmers hoping sorghum would become popular again.
