The Farm Report
by Bob Wilhelm, Cub Reporter
For those of us who grew up on the farm in the 50's thru the 70's, we had a fair amount of "low tech" experiences. Pitch fork time in the barn, spade time chasing thistles, bean walking, and the list goes on. If you left the farm right after High School, you no doubt have heard of the equipment and technological advancements in agriculture, but they are staggering when you consider the impact. With the corn crop popping out of the ground this spring, you can see the effect of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as shown in these images below. The ability of the software to automatically cut off the planting of seeds while planting what I call "point rows" and "end rows", avoids the "double planting" that previously occurred. I remember cultivating the "point rows" of corn and beans and wiping out the vast amount of crop that was growing between the primary rows. Those professional farmers today say that this technology increases yield and decreases cost. Of course, this is just the tip of the GPS iceberg, as it effects agriculture production, such as chemical application, yield monitoring, and much, much more.
