Sunday night, Unadilla Fire & Rescue, held their annual banquet at Mal's Bar & Grill. The department had 47 calls for service last year and have had 21 calls so far this year. The most Fire calls was a 3-way tie between Alexis Seelhoff, Tyler Crownover, and Kyle Johnson. The most Rescue calls went to Betty Vodicka, and the most All Around calls went to Joseph Peterson. The officers are: Jonathan Vodicka, Fire Chief, Steve Vodicka, Assistant Fire Chief, Rescue Co-Captains, Amy Rohlfs and Alexis Seelhoff, Safety Officer, Chuck Porter, and Officer at Large, Tyler Crownover. The food was great, and catching up in person with old friends was fun. We can never thank these folks enough for all they do for our community.

The Unadilla ballfield is ready for players! As you can see from our calendar, it's pretty much booked for the summer.

The German Welding Gas Bottle Thing
By
Bob Wilhelm, Cub Reporter
The other day I was asked by a young man from Wilber to exchange his empty Argon bottle for a Stargon bottle for a mig welder. Now that might sound like I know what I am talking about but if you know me then you know that isn’t the case. Fortunately, I have never let my lack of knowledge on a topic keep me from talking about it. So, I loaded up the empty bottle in BLULEDR and we went to town to an Iron Works shop in Syracuse, whose name shall remain a secret. After arriving at said Iron Works shop in Syracuse the proprietor looked at the old bottle and commented that it was old and made in Germany. He pointed to a small four paned window etched in the metal at the top of the bottle and told me that originally that was a swastika and that after the war people in the U.S. weren’t too keen on buying items with a swastika on them so they closed off the figure to look like a four paned window.

Not that anyone would pull my leg but I did some internet research and found several welding bottle images such as these: The Paisley Coffee Club members also concurred with the above. (So it must be true.)

I found information that said Allied Forces “captured” substantial German assets after VE day and shipped them back to the US in mass quantities. As such, there are very many swastika cylinders still in use here. Most are not recognized because the swastika was covered with a box stamp that makes it look like four small boxes.
Imagine using a bottle of welding gas in the U.S. in 2022 that was used in pre-WWII or during WWII that may have been used to build a German U-Boat or tank or other weapon of war.

A while back, a lady contacted me and asked if the Christian Church had ever raised enough money to put stained glass windows in the sanctuary. These two are my favorites: Sunrise and Sunset. Aren't they beautiful?
