Are you a gardener? We have several folks interested in having a Farmer's Market on Main Street this summer. If you would like more information, please call Dawn Prelle at 308-760-7781. She lives just west of Unadilla.
Last Wednesday, three organizations came together and planted a scarlet oak tree in the arboretum on the south side of Main Street. Thanks so much to all those involved and those who sponsored this event: B103, Grimm's Gardens, and Arbor Day Farm. Have you planted any new trees? It is more important now than ever!

Don't forget to mark your calendars for next Wednesday, May 4th, for the Food Bank distribution. All are welcome.
We spotted this bald eagle just west of Syracuse along the old highway. It must have had something very yummy to munch on as it didn't fly off until we were almost beside it.

Good news: there WILL be a dinner at the gym on Memorial Day. More details later. The History and Veterans Rooms will also be open that day.
Oh, that pretty purple stuff is back! Now it has creeped into our front yard. Feelings about this are unprintable here.
So sad to report that the outdoor bathrooms at the park were vandalized over the weekend. Please folks, report any suspicious activity you see!
The tree photo from last week is just west of town, off the drive way that goes north. Do you know where this tree is at??? It's just starting to bloom and should be beautiful if the wind dies down.

We don't have records of everyone buried in our local cemetery. At present there are 1102 burials documented. This is one that I didn't know about (research and documentation provided by Jeff Chipman. Please note that Huffman's burial here is a probability, our cemetery records can not substantiate this, as they were lost in 1929.)
The Omaha Daily Bee, issue of 7-23-1887: (This is the most detailed of many articles on this subject, however it is much too long to reproduce here.) "The execution of Huffman was the first legal hanging that has ever occured in Otoe County." (It took place in front of the Otoe County Courthouse.) "and his body was cut down and turned over to Coroner Brauer, who left with it this afternoon overland for Unadilla for burial." It is noted that Huffman was working in Unadilla for his brother-in-law when he met James Bell, also from Unadilla. They decided to rob the Missouri Pacific passenger train near Dunbar and take $17,000 in silver bouillion. They removed a section of rail, causing the entire train to overturn, killing the engineer and injuring almost all the passengers, including many performers in Forepaugh's Circus. (Could this be the source of the rumor of spider monkeys near Dunbar?)

Monday night we attended the Spring Band Concert, wth musicians in 7th - 12th Grade, including a grandson and great-niece. It was directed by Brandy Hall and she did an amazing job! We especially enjoyed "Fresh Trash" by the JH Percussion Ensemble and the Star Wars saga at the end.
