Calling all Legion members: The Annual Flag Disposal Ceremony will be next Tuesday evening, October 11, at the Post Home in Syracuse. The public is invited and there will be a light lunch after. If you have any old flags you want disposed, please get them to Bob Wilhelm before this date.
Such beautiful weather we've been having. We went on the "Trail of Treasures" on Hwy 136 Saturday morning and found some interesting items; brought home a few! We started out in Beatrice and worked our way back to Hwy 50. We went through a few small towns we hadn't been to for awhile.

This sign caught our attention in St. Mary, NE. After putting it on Facebook we learned that the land for the town was donated by a gentleman named Smart. Bev Johnson remembers it being called that when she was a child. Susan Cropp reports the north side of the tracks was always known as St. Mary and some of the land on the south side is still listed as Smartville on the land deeds! Don't you just love the days when you learn something new!!!

Our condolences to the friends and family of Helen McKinney, who recently passed away.
Wasn't that some Nebraska game Saturday night? Glad we could chalk one up in the win column. We did a pre-game meal at Mal's - it was great as always! There were some young kids dressed up in their finest and then they were heading to the Homcoming Dance. Mal's now has a pool table for the young (or young at heart) crowd. A great evening all in all.
If you're new to the Unadilla area, we'd love to share your news!
Couldn't resist this beauty in the parking lot at Oschelins!

Going into Nebr. City the "old way". Had some pretty great times here at John Brown's Cave when we were kids!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my story about the chaps last week. We still haven't identified the owner, but we've learned more history about the area!
Don't forget the Unadilla Area Foundation meeting, next Tuesday, 10-18, at the Library, 7 p.m. Hope to see you there!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 10-6-1922, The Otoe Union:
The average temperature was 71.3 degrees, the total precipitation was 1.88 inches, almost 2 inches below normal. L.H. Judkins, manager of the Farmer's Lumber Co. for years, purchased the yards and stock and would continue the business. "The Russell Creek threshing crew commenced stack threshing this week." (anyone know what that means?) There were approximately 5000 miles of state highway in Nebraska.
