Don't forget Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 9th.

Only a couple more weeks until Spring! And with that will come the beginning of baseball/softball season. Some teams are practicing now in the gym. It will also mean increased traffic down and around the ballpark. Please remember the intersection by the Park is now a 4-way stop. Be on the lookout for our kids!

The Red Elm, pictured above, is a close relative to the hackberry. Like the American Elm, it is susceptible to the Dutch Elm disease, but is shaped more like a vase that the more rounded and weeping canopy of its cousin. Indians, pioneers, and even revolutionary soldiers would chew the inner bark and it would become very "slippery like", hence the name. Chewing the inner bark was used as a remedy for many common ailments like fever, wounds, and sore throats. Even deadly bullet wounds! It produces small, round wind pollinated flowers in the spring, and its leaves are not near as large as the American elm, but double the size of the Siberian Elm. It makes excellent firewood and can be readily identified due to the reddish brown color of the heartwood. It can grow to heights of 60 - 80'. The one pictured above is approximately 65' high and has a circimference at 4'5" off the ground, with an average canopy with of 50'. It's located across the street north of the east end of the fire house. Thanks for sharing Bob

The Otoe County Legion/Auxiliary meeting that was to be held at the Community Center on 2-16, was cancelled due to the temperature and icy road conditions. It will not be rescheduled.

Congratulations to Mal's Bar & Grill on their third year anniversary! It's so great to stop in for one of their specials. Have you tried them yet? We had the prime rib and shrimp on Valentine's Day. Yes, it was yummy and did they have a crowd!
