Nature's Signs by Renowned Cub Reporter Bob Wilhelm

There is a fellow in Unadilla who "fancies" himself a predictor of the weather and claims ants build up the height of their ant hills when heavy rain is imminent. Well, get out the canoes folks, because my ant hills are built up and the little guys are putting out life preservers as a precaution as well!

I am so sad to report the passing of my brother, Rodney Boardman.

Rod Boardman 450

Rodney Dean Boardman was born on April 23, 1950, in Valentine, NE. He was the son of Loy L. Boardman and G. Darlene (Fisk) Boardman. He married Nanette Marie Cary, June 18th, 1993, in Lincoln, NE. Rodney & Nan resided in Lincoln for several years. Rodney passed Thursday evening, April 24th, the day after his 75th birthday, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, with his wife at his side.

Rodney was active in high school sports and had a love of cars, the louder and faster, the better! He had the nickname of "Chicken" which was achieved with racing his 1963 Mustang on thed Mile (Old Hwy #2, that went through Unadilla). Hot roders came from all over SE Nebraska to race his Mustang with its 289 engine. His mother would hear the racing and send Loy down to get Rodney to stop racing, only to find out later that Loy decided to be the flagman! He had a cabin on the Blue River, and enjoyed boating and fishing with the families.

Rodney was diagnosed with acute Leukimia in the spring of his junior year in High School and was only given days to live. His parents allowed UNMC to submit him for test trials, as there weren't any other options to try and extend his life. His mother told the medical staff how stubborn he was, and he would probably outlive them, which he did by several years. Rodney survived his cancer and went on to own and operate Rod's Conoco in Unadilla for several years. Later he moved to Lincoln, where he worked as a mechanic until his health wouldn't allow him to do all that crawling underneath cars. He finished his work career driving big rigs and seeing the country.

Rod is survived by his wife, Nan, Step-son Zach, his siblings, Barbara (Bob) Wilhelm, Jimmy (Beckie) Boardman, Mary Hanke, and Larry (Denise) Boardman.

Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Loy & Darlene, siblings Linda and Danny, and nephew, Cory Hanke.

Per Rodney's wishes, there will be no services. Cards of sympathy and memorials can be sent to Nanette at PO Box 29795, Lincoln, NE 68529, for later designation by the family.
