Haven't been to any orchards yet, but these two trees across from Dan's Tire are loaded with apples!

It is reported the Groundhog Golf Tournament was a huge success. There were 98 participants and a good time was had by all!

Congratulations to Fred & Marilyn Wallen, who will be celebrating 59 years together on 8-30. Fred is the son of Lloyd & Edith Wallen, and grew up where we live now.

New residents, have you checked out our amazing Library at the Community Center? If they're not open, check out the little Lending Library by the Post Office.

ROMANIAN OFFICIALS VISIT OTOE COUNTY
By Unadilla International Cub Reporter Bob Wilhelm
The Nebraska Historical Society website describes the Friendship Force Club as an international organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1977, their goal is to bridge the gap of understanding among the citizens of the world, thereby making it possible to bring about world peace and a better understanding of other cultures. The Friendship Force of Lincoln has 64 family and individual members, which includes Bruce and Carlene Kiem of Syracuse. If anyone is interested in joining them, they are invited to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.
Bruce Keim reported that the Lincoln Friendship Force Club hosted 5 city officials from different cities in Romania, with the goal of exposing them to our local and county governments. Two of the members, Olah Emese and Ella Mihalcea, stayed with Bruce and Carlene. On Sunday, August 10th, Olah and Ella met with State Representative Bob Hallstrom at the Keim home. Then all five of the officials headed to Crete for a tour of that town, accompanied by the mayor and other city officials.
On Wednesday morning they met at Mal's Bar and Grill, located on beautiful and historic Unadilla's Main Street, with Otoe County Commissioners Dan Crownover and Chuck Cole. Dan gave them a tour of the Unadilla Library and City Offices. They also stopped at the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse, were given a tour of Syracuse by their city officials, and spoke about how city government works. That evening they attended the City Council meeting.
On Thursday they met with orgainizations including the Orphan Grain Train and BraveB Advocacy Center in Lincoln. Friday they toured the Nebraska State Capitol and ended the evening with a performance of "Frozen" at the Lied in Lincoln.
In an article by Dan Swanson of KNCY, Mihalcea spoke of the positive impression she had of Nebraska. She saw, through her host family, a very strong community where everyone knows everyone, which she said was like her home. She said there is a sense of safety with "no fences or closed doors" in the Syracuse community, although she thinks Romania is among the safest countries in Europe.
Thank you to Bruce Keim for providing the details of this visit.
