Remembering the flood of 1950

Recently Barb hosted a meeting at the community center's history room with Kyle Hauschild and Maddie Million of the Nebraska Resource District from the Tecumseh office. The purpose was to review the large collection of photos, newspaper stories, and other informationn about the 1950 flood. Kyle said they want to use this information to put together a program to show the positive impact the work of the NRD has had and will continue to have through theirs efforts at watershed management. John Stilwell, who was a Freshman at Palmyra High School when the flood occurred shared his memories about the flood and its impact on their family farm. John said they had just moved into town from their farm along the banks of the Hooper Creek betweem Unadilla and Palmyra. The farmstead was 1/2 mile north of Highway 2 and 14th Road. John said they were not unaccustomed to flooding on the farm and he remembers several times when the Hooper left its banks and water was nearing their house. John said the high-water mark in their living room was just 2 feet from the ceiling. The morning after the storm John remembered going with his father to the recovery scene for the bus that had been washed off old Highway 2 and into the Nemaha River east of Unadilla about 2 miles. He said he skipped school that day and the principal was not very happpy with him the next day when he found out why he missed school. He also remembered that the Syracuse High School band had been to Lincoln that day to participate in the visit from President Truman who came to Lincoln on a train. The band could not make it to Syracuse due to the flooding and spent some time in Palmyra. In a school paper by Cory Schultz reported that the band returned to Lincoln for overnight lodging. Cory's paper also has several interviews he conducted with area residents telling of their experiences with the flooding. If you want to visit the history room and see the information about the flood you can contact Barb or the village office to make arrangments.
