SQUIRREL CONSTRUCTION ADVANCES...ITS NUTS!

A few weeks ago, we did a story on the community of squirrels that live in the tree line west of the Syracuse Runza. That story focused on the lifestyles that those squirrels must have had. Such as commuting into town to scout for walnuts while leaving the little squirrels to attend school and pre-school where they would learn to do all things squirrel. Well, surprisingly I received quite a bit of ridicule over that article from some close-minded squirrel hating folks who were obviously unawar of the advanced intelligence and ingenuity of the Nebraska squirrel. This week a confidential source, we will call him Kcin whose preferred pronoun is them, told me of a new unique squirrel housing area a few miles Southwest of Mals"s Bar and Grill on Unadilla's beautiful and historic mainstreet. I visited this place which is just east of the old Emil Royal farm building site where a prominent local political figure was born (but that is for another story). As you can see from the image above, these little squirrels are utilizing what apprears to be white plastic shopping bags to weave into their conventional nesting materials of sticks and leaves. Not only are they recycling the bags so the area does not look like a littered up truck stop parking lot, but they are insulating their nests to save on utility bills, boost their solar heating capabilities, provide protection from rains and brighten the lighting within the nest. So, imagine these squirrels waiting in the checkout line at Nitty Gritty Gas & Thrift (Exit #2 off Hwy 2 Unadilla) with their grocery and other "nesthold" items when they answered that oft asked retail question paper or plastic with a resounding PLASTIC PLEASE before scampering out of the building south bound and down. A more intense investigation into this phenominon will no doubt occur when it is brought before the research committee at the Paisley Bottom Coffee Shop and Critical Thinking Laboratory. So stand by!
March is Poison Prevention month. Have you checked your medicine cabinets and cupboards for outdated medicines or chemicals? Is there anything in reach of small hands? Better safe than sorry!
Advice from some beekeepers: Let your garden sleep in: wait to clean up until after we have a week of temps in the 50's or above. Pollinators are still sleeping in plant stems and leaves.
