Condolences to the family and friends of Everett A. Baker
who passed away 8-4

Saturday Bob & Barb Wilhelm, Michele, Maisie,
& Madison Hillman, Scott, Jenn, Ani, & Brody
Hitzemann, and Loy Boardman went to the Peter
Kiewitt Lodge at Mahoney Park to help celebrate
a trio of birthdays. Loy's sister Melva Boardman
Morrissey turned 80, Melva's daughter Mikki,
turned 60, and Mikki's daughter Carrie, turned
40. Other family members attending were:
Larry & Denise Boardman, Mary Hanke and
Larry Elofson, Cory Hanke, and Deric, Codi,
& Emerson Hanke. Melva has 8 children and they
were all able to make it home for the party. Some
of the cousins had not seen each other for over
30 years.

Last Tuesday's storm caused a lot of tree damage in
town and the country. Rain reports were from 3.40"
to 3.80". Several reported small hail.

Despite the weather, the Fair got off to a great start
Sunday night. Bob Wilhelm suggests visiting the
produce entries. Apparently Brody Brandt has
inheritied his grandpa's ability to raise big onions.
Chuck McGowan has some beautiful specimens also.

Past Unadilla resident, Karen Wyatt Drevo,
will be presenting
"Maria Rodaway - Prairie Pioneer"
on Thursday, September 10,
at the Morton James Public Library.
The program is sponsored by the
Otoe County Geneological Society
and the Nebraska Humanities Council.
Karen is Maria's great-great-
granddaughter, and tell the story of her
trip across the ocean, ending a 7 1/2 year
separation of her family.
The program is free and open to the public.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO
Friday, 8-13-1909, The Otoe Union: The old bank
building was bought by Catherine Butt for use as
a Post Office. Alex Sloane sold his farm to William
Hahne. The County Commissioners ordered all residents
to "mow or otherwise destroy all weeds to the middle
of the public roads running along you land
between July 15th and August 15th."

CHURCH NEWS
Unadilla United Methodist Women met Wednesday,
August 5, with 7 members present. President June
Tipken called the meeting to order. The Purpose
was read in unison. A Corsage for Missions was given
to Janet Twohig as hostess. June conducted a memorial
service in honor of Nellie Sasseen, who passed away
8-30-2008. Her obituary was read as was Psalm 23,
and the service was closed with a prayer. Norma
Boettcher, Spiritual Growth, read from Response
magazine "Changing Sudan and Changing Us." The
lesson was titled "Life Stages". Irma Taylor reported
she had sent one card. Cookie Sunday will not be held
in August as it is the same Sunday as the Ice Cream
Social. It was decided that money collected in the
white church and Nickels for Nigeria, will all
go to orphans in Nigeria. Guest speaker for the
September meeting will be Gabby Ayola from
10,000 Villages in Lincoln.
