There's another new face at the Village Office. Dwight Kastens will

be taking over the reins from Keith Block, who's retiring after

30+ years of service. We hope Keith will continue as a

"consultant" and hope Alberta doesn't have too many

"honey-do" jobs for him! Congratulations to you both.

Madison Hillman got to see her first UNL volleyball game on

September 10, accompanied by sister Maisie, Mom Michele, and

Grandpa Bob. From all reports it was a great game,

UNL beating the opposition in 3 games.

Unadilla United Methodist Women met September 2, with thirteen

members and one visitor present. The Purpose was read in unison.

Norma Boettcher was given a Corsage for Missions as hostess.

May Lamb, Education & Interpretation, read from the prayer

calendar of Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, followed by

Mathew 5:15-31. Irma Taylor, Social Action, reported she had

sent 3 cards. A motion was made and carried, that all officers

be retained in their present office, with Norma Boettcher taking

Spiritual Growth. Cookie Sundays will be the second Sunday of the

month beginning in September. It was reported that an Upper

Room will be mailed to Elsie Snyder each time an issue is

published. The group will help with Bingo at Good Samaritan in

October. Sept. 12 is Blue River Fall meeting at Waverly.

Sept. 19 a Saturday evening service will be held at 5:00 p.m.,

and will be held every third Saturday of the month; there will

be no services the following morning. Following the business meeting,

Gabby Ayala from 10,000 Villages, Lincoln, spoke about the store

in Lincoln. All items are hand made by natives from many countries,

and are made out of recycled goods. She displayed jewelry, baskets,

etc. made from shells, paper wrappers, wire, and other materials.

Most of the money goes back to the crafters. The next meeting

will be October 7th with May Lamb as leader and Jody

Clark as hostess.

Friday, 9-24-1909, The Otoe Union:

A daughter was born to Otto Heckathorn. The B&M crew completed

the new stockyards. Frank Yeigh was building a new home for

I.P. Taylor which was 26 X 26m with a 14 X 16 addition.

A.F. Nichols was trying to sell a quarter section 2 1/2 miles

NW of town. C.N. Griswold had for sale: "20 breeding ewes

and a thoroughbred Stropshire ram."

Guests attending the fifth annual Pumpkin Festival at Bloom Where

You're Planted Farm, rural Avoca, will be treated to some new

attractions this season. It will now include hay rides and the

newly renovated Schoolhouse Cafe.

The Pumpkin Festival runs every Friday through Sunday,

September 19th to November 1st.

Hours are 1:00-6:00 p.m. Fridays

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturdays & Sundays

The farm is open at other times by appointment for field trips

and parties. The $4.00 admission charge includes access to all

the attractions on the farm, including the opportunity for

every visitor to take a hay ride.

Greenblatt & Seay proudly announce the

THIRTEENTH

ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE.

This historical, hysterical event will take place

on Sunday, October 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium

of the Old Avoca Schoolhouse. In the Open Division,

fiddlers will play a hoedown, waltz, and a tune of

choice. There will also be other divisions of competition

available for the adventurous fiddlers, including

a Singing Fiddler's Contest, a Twin Fiddler's

contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's contest (fiddle

tunes played on any instrument other than a fiddle),

and a Hocus-Pocus Contest (cross-tuning, sound

effects, dancing, etc.) which will give fiddlers an

opportunity to play tunes that are usually not

allowed in any other contest. The prizes for the winners

in Open Division are $100 for first place, $50 for

second place, and $25 for third place. Prizes will also

be awarded for 1st place in other contests. Registration

for contestants starts at 1:30 p.m the day of the BEE.

Admission is $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.

Fiddlers and their backups are admitted for free.

"Fiddle Master Class"

Saturday, October 24, 2L00 - 4:00 p.m.

Sponsored by the Big Muddy Fiddle Club

Any skill level may participate. Listeners may also register

to sit in on the session and pick up some tips. The workshop

will be held at the home of Jim Harvey, 518 S 88th Street,

Omaha. Seating is limited - register early!

Jamming will follow 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., free of charge.
