Another Grounhog Celebration is in the books!

Activities at the gym were fairly well attended although only about
50 people came to listen to Don Ulrich give his presentation
on Vietnam. Of course, with the weather being what it was and the
change in time, it wasn't totally unexpected. Most vendors did
well. Groundhog cupcakes made an appearance at the Christian
Church bake sale.

Groundhog Diego Velazco

Summer Wardyn waits for a balloon dog

Summer's not too sure about this clown thing!
At just over 300, the crowd was smaller than last year, but
we still had 26 entries in the parade, and the decent temperature
of 34 degrees with overcast skies and the wind was calm.
Thanks to Bill Farmer and Perry Stoner for announcing the parade
entries, and to Rochelle Rohlfs for serving as the Grand
Marshall. The Color Guard from the Syracuse Post led the way.
Wilhelm Family Farms won the parade contest with "Green
Groundhog Eater";

tied for second was "Groundhog Off Spring"
and "Hula Hog Island"; and third place went to the "6th Grade Band".
While the parade was passing by, the soup and jerky judges were
busy sampling the entries. Winners of the soup contest, Chili
division, were Jeremy Wilhelm, 1st, for "A Chili Worth Dying For";
2nd place went to Jan Moore for "White Bean Chicken Chili".
In the Vegetable division, Nina Jean Rohlfs won for "Comfort
Vegetable Soup". Rochelle Rohlfs was the winner in the Other
division with "Rueben Soup" and Jeanie Steinkuhler took 2nd
place with "Tomato Tortellini". Soup judges were Paul Wallman,
Gary Royal, and Jill Scheeler, assisted by Maureen Vogt and
Barb Wilhelm. Winners in the Jerky contest were: Jeremy
Wilhelm, 1st, with "Spicy Beef Jerky"; Tony Engelbrecht, 2nd,
with "Unadilla's Best"; and 3rd to Travis Walters with
"Mesquite Jerky". Jerky judges were Gabe Meints, Aaron Rule,
and Jason Hurt, assisted by Michele Hillman. For a free will donation,
those present could taste the entries.

From the pack of 10 loyal Groundhog supporters, Karla Zahn and
Bob Wilhelm were crowned King and Queen of the Groundhog Realm
during a ceremony at The Bar. These two life-long Unadilla residents
will reign until next year's festivities, raising $3144 for Unadilla
Fire & Rescue.

Music at the Duncan Building was provided by Nina
Jean & Brady Rohlfs. Groundhog Poker made a comeback, and the
"One Man Band" entertained in the evening. Area 51 opened the
doors on Buildings A and B, to welcome out-of-towners and
former residents.
The Unadilla Area Foundation would like to say a special thank you
to all the hard working volunteers and participants who made the
celebration possible. See you next year!
