The Unadilla Community Library is highlighting John Grisham's
works during the month of March. Many of his books are available
and two suggestions are "A Painted House" and "The Appeal".
The Library is open Tuesday evenings from 5-6:30 pm

LIBRARY NEWS
The Unadilla Community Library Board met at 4:30 pm on March 3.
Members present were Peggy Leefers, Jean Lucas, Rose Marie Brandt,
Lois Ebert, Shirley Stubbendick, and Alberta Block. Grace Johnson,
reporter for the Nebraska City News Press and Syracuse Journal-
Democrat, was also in attendance.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Due to a
scheduling conflict for Sandi Kimbell, the treasurer's report was
not available.
Shirley reported that the new scholarship applications have been
completed and sent to SDA teacher Tim Isaacs. She also extended
a thank you from the prize winners of the groundhog poster and
story contests. She noted there will be a book sale in connection
with teacher conferences on March 16, 17, & 18. Scholarship
criteria was discussed. A possible suggestion was to make this
scholarship available to graduates whose address bears the
Unadilla (68454) zip code.
Peggy gave an update on the Groundhog celebration. Due to the snowstorm
on the Friday before the event, the crowd was considerably less than
last year, as well as book sales. A groundhog story book,
Groundhog Day by Gail Gibbons, which includes a map of the U.S.
with our own Unadilla Bill marked, will be on display and for sale
for $7.00, at Countryside Bank downtown. Peggy reported income
of $240 from the sale of vendor spaces. The Library also received
$245 from the Community Foundation All Fund Drive.
Peggy also reported she attended the SDA school board meeting.
She presented information to them concerning library property
and the fact the library has been in place and well used for over
15 years. As yet, there is no determination about how the use of
the library and gymnasium will be handled.
Peggy will contact Barb Wilhelm, news correspondent, to ask that she
publish an "author of the month". This could be a way to increase
interest in reading and spark new interest in our library. It was
also decided that a sign placed in front of the building when the
library is open would be helpful in informing the public.
Up coming work schedule is as follows:
March 2, Peggy; March 9, Peggy; March 16, Jean; March 23, Alberta;
March 30, Lois; April 6, Rose Marie; April 13, Peggy, April 20, Peggy.
The next meeting will be held April 27 at 4:30 pm. Meeting adjourned

Friday, 3-11-1910, The Otoe Union:
Frank Farnsworth was selling Copper Cable lightning rods,
manufactured in Omaha. Lou Callaway, Sr, bought the H.J. Nichols
farm. A daughter was born to Frank Wallens'. William Botsford
dragged the road from his farm to town. Albert Beccard applied
for naturalization, John VanAcker was his witness. Former
resident, Mrs. J.A. James, died in Morina, CO. Sanford Purviance
was a new student at the school.

The Otoe County Genealogical Society will hold its next meeting on
March 11, 7 pm, at the Otoe County Museum of Memories,
366 Poplar Street in Syracuse. It will cover reunion planning
and how to ensure that your family tree grows from this event.
Attendees will receive a free reunion planner from Reunions.com
After the meeting, search for information on your Otoe
County ancestors in the reference area.

OTOE COUNTY RURAL SCHOOLS REUNION
On April 10th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Otoe County Genealogical
Society will host its 1st Annual Otoe County Rural Schools Reunion
at Harmony School, 6265 "Q" Road, which is located 8 miles south
of Nebraska City on Hwy #75, and 1/2 mile west on "Q" Road.
Harmony School is a rural schoolhouse that was built in 1879, and was
closed in 1997. This reunion will include a coffee social and tour
of the 130-year old schoolhouse. In addition, it will also give visitors
a chance to assist our society in identifying numerous rural school
photographs from several different districts throughout the county.
The society has come into possession of these prized photographs
through the Otoe County Courthouse Clean-Up Project. The photos
were donated by the Otoe County Clerk's office, and other donations.
PLEASE, come join us at Harmony School and help us pay tribute to
these buildings that contributed so much to the education of our
youth for over 100 years!

IRISH MUSIC CONCERT
Sunday March 14 at 2:30 pm
Greenblatt & Seay & Friends will be singing and playing a variety
of instruments, including fiddle, pennywhistle, guitar, hammered
dulcimer, and banjo. Traditional Irish turnes will be featured,
along with some originals from the hosts.
The concert will be followed by light refreshments, and a chance
to chat and even jam with the performers.
