Condolences to the many family and friends of
Glen F. Wallen
Glen Fred Wallen, 83, Unadilla, passed away Monday, March 29,
2010, at the Good Samaritan Society in Syracuse. He was born
September 17, 1926, to John & Henrietta (Guthals) Wallen.
Glen graduated from Unadilla High School and attended classes
in the College of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska.
He married Beatrice (Betty) Kuenning November 26, 1948,
at Sidney, Iowa. Glen was a farmer all of his life in the
Unadilla area. His real love was his wife and four daughters.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, ping-pong, coon hunting, and
traveling. He was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.
Glen served on the Unadilla Farmer's Coop Board, the Unadilla
Cemetery Association, a member and officer of the Unadilla
Public School Board, and was an avid promoter of 4-H. He was
also an active member of the Coon Hunters Association, and
drove the school bus for Unadilla.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Shirley (Phil) Johnson,
Colorado; Lois (Gary) Green, Missouri; Gloria (Steve) Mendez,
California; and Jolene (Michael) Scott of Virginnia; grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren.
He was laid to rest in the Unadilla Cemetery.

Bob Bryan reports he was the Points Champion in the 5500 lb.
class and placed 2nd in the 5000 lb. class for the
2009-2010 season of the National Antique Tractor
Puller's Association.
Way to go Bob!

Bob & Barb Wilhelm helped Maisie Hillman celebrate her
8th birthday on March 29th along with Madison & Mommy.

Karen Isaacs attended the funeral of her brother-in-law,
Bud Riblett, Saturday in Lincoln. She had lunch with her father,
Dale Stubbendick, on Easter Sunday.

Dale Isaacs is visiting in California and felt the earthquake there
Sunday afternoon. We're sure he'll have more details
when he returns home!

Bev Wilhelm, Bob & Barb Wilhelm, and Maisie & Madison Hillman
had Easter dinner at the home of Ruth Wilhelm in Syracuse.
Also attending were Nick, Lynn, Livia, & Halle Wilhelm, and
Jeremy, Irene, Reagan, & Presley Wilhelm, all Syracuse;
Marcus, Brianne, & Charlie Wilhelm, Omaha; and Dave & Nola
Johnson, Lincoln. It was a beautiful day for an Easter egg
hunt - the food was pretty good, too!

The Cemetery Association held their annual meeting at the
Village Office Saturday morning, April 3. Long-time member
Jack Stilwell, retired, and Dean Luff was appointed to fill
his position. Keith Kimbell became a new member, and Dean Speth
resigned as President. Bob Stanley graciously accepted that
position. The price of plots will remain at $200. Wilhelm will order
a load of rock for the curves between the driveways, and
Todd Krieger will mow the cemetery again this year.

Friday, 4-8-1910, The Otoe Union:
Amy & Sylvia Barrett spent time with their parents at their
farm near Unadilla. Thomas Rodaway, who was suffering with
rheumatism, was taking treatments at Dr. Hillis' hospital
in Syracuse. Amy Pell moved into her new house north of the
Commercial House (last lived in by Fern Isaacs.) William
Thiele purchased a "Brush" automobile. Anna Gartner and
John Wendeln were married at the home of Henry Gartner.

OTOE COUNTY RURAL SCHOOLS REUNION
On April 10th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Otoe County Genealogical
Society will host its 1st Annual Otoe County Rural Schools Reunion
at Harmony School, 6265 "Q" Road, which is located 8 miles south
of Nebraska City on Hwy #75, and 1/2 mile west on "Q" Road.
Harmony School is a rural schoolhouse that was built in 1879, and was
closed in 1997. This reunion will include a coffee social and tour
of the 130-year old schoolhouse. In addition, it will also give visitors
a chance to assist our society in identifying numerous rural school
photographs from several different districts throughout the county.
The society has come into possession of these prized photographs
through the Otoe County Courthouse Clean-Up Project. The photos
were donated by the Otoe County Clerk's office, and other donations.
PLEASE, come join us at Harmony School and help us pay tribute to
these buildings that contributed so much to the education of our
youth for over 100 years!

The Otoe County Genealogical Society will host it's quarterly Genealogy
Internet Workshop at the Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska
City on April 8th at 7:00 pm. This workshop will cover how to utilize
numerous websites to assist you in your research. The library has access
to Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest, both of which have online records
of the U.S. Federal Census' and to thousands of other valuable data
bases as well. So please come join us, and bring along a copy of your
family tree so you can fill in some of those missing gaps.

SEA SONGS AND OTHER WATERY TALES
A new family show suitable for all ages, the musical
presentation features a variety of water inspired songs
accompanied by penny whistles, recorders, harmonica,
banjo, guitar, folk harp, musical saw, and rain stick.
The concert takes place on Sunday, April 11th
2:30 pm in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse.

"HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME"

a new comedy opening at Mahoney State Park. "Having a Wonderful
Time, Wish You Were Here" is a wild bedroom comedy by Billy Van Zandt
and Jane Millmore. Directed by Kevin Colbert, it is filled with
double standards, midnight rendezvous, and a hungry bear. If you don't
like to laugh, you'd better stay away from this one. PG13 is suggested
for some adult situations.

The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley will be holding auditions for
"Heaven Can Wait" on April 5 & 6 at 7 pm. There are 7 principal
parts for men and women ages 20 and up, 11 minor parts for men and
women 18 and up. Everyone, including those with little or no theater
experience, are encouraged to participate.
