The Fair's over, school has started, where did the summer go?

This year's Fair Parade was a "Battle of the Bands",

we counted 5 (sorry, the photo of the

Junior High Band didn't turn out); also big trucks, big tractors,

and big lawnmowers!

Our local extension club had a nice booth at the County Fair

and shared this information: The Sundowners began in January

of 1964 as an Otoe County Home Extension Club. There were

17 charter members and four of those women are still active

in the club. In 1993 the Otoe County clubs changed their

name to the Association of Family and Community Education.

They continue today with many projects, with the underlying

commitment to promote education for themselves and

others in our community.

The family of Rose Bartling held a potluck dinner Sunday at the

Duncan Building in honor of her 98th birthday. It was on her

actual birthday, August 22nd. Besides all three children and their

families attending, Dale & Karen Isaacs and Dale Stubbendick were

there. Dale is Rose's brother. Her other brother Roy, and wife

Wanda, Lincoln also attended, as well as Rose's first cousin,

Irving & Ellen Stubbendick, Syracuse. When a guest said to Rose,

"In two more years you'll be 100" Rose replied, "Well,

I'm working on that."

Friday, 8-26-1910, The Otoe Union:

Cliff Durbin "jumped ship" and started playing baseball with

Syracuse. Ben Dunham left for Canada and Clyde Rankin went

with him. Most of the wooden material at the Duff elevator was

replaced with concrete. George Driver went to Battle Creek,

Iowa, to attend school. The annual picnic included: ballgames,

dance, 100-yard men's race, three-legged race, sack race,

relay races, shoe-tying race, and a tug of war.
