Several residents visited the State Fair at Grand Island
over the weekend - they all said it just wasn't the same!

Bob & Barb Wilhelm hosted a birthday party for Ani
Hitzemann Saturday evening, for his 4th birthday.
Those attending were Mom, Dad, and Brody Hitzemann,
Michele, Maisie, and Madison Hillman, great-aunt Mary
Hanke, Omaha, great-grandfather Loy Boardman, great-
grandmother Ruth Wilhelm, both Syracuse, grandparents
Lavelle and Judy Hitzemann, Angie, Jaylynn, Abby, and
Eli Arndt, all Hampton, and Trista and Dawson Newcombe,
Bertrand. Everyone had a great time and by the end of the
evening, everyone knew who Buzz Lightyear and Woody were.

Please, fly an American flag of any size on 9/11, which is
Patriot Day. In the days, weeks, and months following 9/11,
our country was bathed in flags as citizens mourned the
incredible losses and stood shoulder to shoulder against terrorism.
Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Honor those who lost
their lives, and their families, and those who are fighting today,
at home and abroad, to preserve our freedom.

After visiting the Unadilla Community Library, it was easy to
see that Peggy and her helpers have been very busy sorting and
rearranging. Don't forget about this great community asset.
Hopefully, there will be expanded hours when they are all done.

The proceeds of the meal served to the 43rd Army Band
on Unadilla day were used to purchase 2 large flags for
the Syracuse Middle School

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 9-2-1910, The Otoe Union:
Fred Wallen rented one of his farms to John Stubbendieck.
Everyone living south of the tracks had to move due to the high
water; at least 35 hogs were lost. It was reported that the water
was almost as high as the flood of 1908. M.W. Duncan left for
his old home in Atlanta, Illinois, which he had not visited for
32 years. Nellie Hahn and Frank Penn were married in Omaha.
I.H. Stewart sold his blacksmith shop to O.M. Sasseen
(Dean Speth's metal building was the location.)
