Peggy Leefers reports several Unadilla area residents attended
the annual Bluebirds Across Nebraska Conference in Crete
last weekend. The programs and slide shows were enjoyed by all.
John Rogers, New York state, talked about the bluebirds.
Kelly Norris, Iowa, spoke on "Gardening for Wildlife" and
Bill & Sandy Seibert, Omaha, showed the bluebird trail supplies
to take with you when you monitor your trail. Betsy Finch of
Raptor Recovery, Elmwood, and her assistant brought a
European Barn Owl and a Peregrine Falcon, and talked about
their recovery program. Dennis Ferraro, a snake specialist from
UNL showed some snakes he had picked up on the road to
Crete and gave some interesting demonstrations in snake
handling. He also answered many questions from the audience.
The food was great, as usual, and there were lots of wildlife
related raffles and silent auction items to try for. Next year the
conference will be held in Kearney - anyone interested in
wildlife should experience at least one of these conferences.

The Otoe County Relay for Life will be held on June 11, 2011,
at South Park in Syracuse. Unadilla resident and Deputy Clerk
Amber Kempkes has organized a team for the second year and is
trying to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The
cause is especially close to her and her brother, Aaron,
who lost their mother, Georgia Kempkes to breast cancer
in 2002. Donations of any size would be greatly appreciated.
Also, Amber is selling luminaries in honor or memory of
someone whose life has been affected by cancer. They are $10
and will be lit after dark during a remembrance ceremony.
Amber's team also needs more volunteers. If you are interested
you can stop at the Village Office in Unadilla or visit the team
