Rachel Block Dirkse was instrumental in the building of the Kimmel-Block picnic shelter by donating the seed money from her parent's memorial fund. She attended the dedication but was inadvertently left out of the program. She shares these thoughts: "I was overwhelmed when I received the picture that showed the picnic shelter was named the KIMMEL-BLOCK shelter. Happy tears were shed. I gave the money to build the shelter because I know the Unadilla residents love to have "potluck picnics". So many happy memories are "in my heart" about Unadilla, the wonderful people, the good foods, and the fun times during the many picnics held over the years. My favorite memory of the Unadilla picnics was the making of the "Refrigerator Coleslaw". Yum! So many gallons were made and all was consumed. Pictures that my parents had have been mailed to Bob Stanley. I hope he has shared them with many of you, as well as putting them in the Museum of Memories. Thank you for the honor you have given to Mom & Dad Block to show that you appreciated the work and love that they did for years. There are also many other Unadilla friends who worked side-by-side with them to prepare food and fun for the Unadilla people. Do enjoy this Kimmel-Block picnic shelter for many, many years to come. "Picnics are fun, but, we do need shelter from the sun."
