Sunday, September 4, friends and neighbors gathered to wish farewell to Mike, Becki, and Matt Hickman. They will be leaving soon to live in Beijing, China, where Mike will be attached to the U.S. Embassy. There was a lively blue rock shoot, fantastic food, and great conversations and memories. They will be missed.

The Otoe County Genealogical Society met Thursday night at the Library with 15 members and one guest present. Cindy Steinhoff Drake, Nebraska State Historical Society, gave a presentation on the registering cemeteries project. It was created by law, and Cindy talked about some of the problems they have, like not having a contact person for the cemetery, and their shrinking budget. Curtis Wolbert, president, informed the society that all the cemeteries in Otoe County have been registered. The Rural Schools project was also discussed. Thanks to all those who have purchased a sign for "their" school. The signs will be placed as near to the original site as possible with the permission of the land owners.

The Scott Hitzemann family were visitors at the Bob Wilhelm home over the weekend. It was a quick trip, but they managed to see all the grandparents while here. And you can't get too many hugs and kisses from the grandkids!

Congratulations to Arlan Liesemeyer, who won the Best Educational Display at the Nebraska Artifact Show held on August 27, 2011, at the Seward Nebraska County Fairgrounds. The show was for the exhibition of authentic prehistoric Native American artifacts and related items, and was strictly non-commercial. The speaker was Dr. Jack L. Hofman of the University of Kansas and the event was sponsored by the Archaeological Society of Nebraska.

For those of you who didn't make it, the 911 memorial held Sunday evening at the Kimmel Building, it was a wonderful event. Everyone involved did a terrific job.

Thanks to Dean & Donna for their donation of 45 new books to the Library. All the wonderful community support is deeply appreciated. Besides fiction, the library houses a section on Nebraska authors, reference and historical material, biographies, craft and quilting, and special interest books. There is also a special section for infants through age 6. Soon to arrive: "In My Time" by Dick Cheney and "The Best of Me" by Nicholas Sparks.
