Thursday evening Barb Wilhelm and sister, Mary Hanke, attended the presentation at Morton-James Library about Nebraska in the Civil War. It was given by David Wells, curator of the GAR/Civil War Museum in Nebraska City. Did you know that 220 Nebraskans died in the Civil War and that the last Civil War veteran died in Beatrice in 1948? If you’re a history buff, you missed out on a great deal of information.

The trees that were recently planted in the park were part of the ReTree Nebraska challenge. Its goal is to plant 1 million trees in the state’s communities by 2017. ReTree Nebraska is based on the strong belief that we can make things better through the simple acts of planting and caring for trees, and that everyone can play a part, no matter how big or small.
