A note from Bob Brandt informs me that my "tulip" tree featured

in last week's newsletter is really a saucer magnolia,

and is also the state tree of Mississippi. How did it end up

in Nebraska?

Our Senior Coffees were a semi-success. There was lots of

conversations and some new friendships were made. We'll try

it again in the fall, after Labor Day.

Grandpa & Grandma Wilhelm, Mary, Emmie, & Hudson Hanke,

sister Madison, Michele & Matt, and Grace & Hope Kuenning,

celebrated Maisie Hillman's 10th birthday with some yummy cake

and chocolate ice cream Saturday evening.

From Peggy Leefers: Area residents from Cook, Talmage, and

Unadilla traveled to Kearney for the Great Plains Sandhill Crane and

Bluebird Festival March 23 & 24. Gordon Hopp and Jerry & Peggy

Leefers enjoyed seeing thousands of sandhill cranes along the highway

between Grand Island and Kearney on their way. Bluebirds Across

Nebraska combines every four years with the crane festival. Many took

tours to the Rowe Sanctuary and surrounding areas to see the morning

flight of the cranes leaving the fields to feed, and again in the evening to

see them return for their overnight stay in the water of the Platte River,

where they are protected from predators. BAN, (Bluebirds Across Nebraska),

had many fund raising activities on Saturday, and there were some beautiful

items at the vendor's tables. Of course, bluebird information and houses

were in plentiful supply! It's always fun and informative to get a group of

bird and nature lovers together and exchanging new ideas. The highlight

of the Friday evening dinner was Ron Cisar and his "Earth Music". Cisar

writes, plays, and sings, combined with a beautiful slide show. He is a

John Denver fan and his music reflects that style. Programs included

"The return of the mountain lion to Nebraska", "The private lives of

sandhill cranes", and "Bluebirds day to day and season to season".

A fun presentation was "Lets talk wild" with a hilarious segment about

going through security at an airport with elk antlers. One of the workshops

was "Putting WOW in your wildlife photography" and Keanna Leonard

from the Rowe Sanctuary spoke about getting our young people outdoors.

She said, "Let them get dirty, play with bugs, and see the birds and wildlife

so they can develop an appreciation for nature. Leonard believes the end

result would be less bullying and sick children, with adults who would see

how important it is to protect our environment. One of the great "finds" Peggy

brought home, is now on the bookshelf at the library. "Have You Seen Mary?"

is the story of a pair of cranes who become separated during the annual

migration along the Platte. All ages will enjoy the story and the beautiful

photography by Michael Forsberg.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 4-5-1912, The Otoe Union:

W.N. Hunter and Melvin Wilkens bought the Syracuse Democrat and

the Otoe Union from Mary A. Baker, and would keep the same printing

schedule and prices for one year. Bert Russell had hedgeposts

for sale. Angeline Milliken was moving to California. R.J. Vaughn,

W.C. Botsford, and L.D. Finigan were elected to the Village Board.
