The Travis Burkman Benefit
This letter is on behalf of the Travis Burkman Family. Travis, husband of Karla West, is a 35 year old loving husband and father of two who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Brain Cancer. As part of the fundraising team for the Travis Burkman Benefit, I am here seeking donations.
On December 26, 2009, Travis had a seizure while holding his twin two year old sons. A subsequent MRI showed a tumor followed by the most devastating news of all, Stage 3 Astrocytoma Cancer which a biopsy confirmed. Travis had been an otherwise healthy and active 33 year old husband and father. On February 2, 2010, Travis had the tumor removed during an eight hour surgery.
In January 2012, Travis noticed infection type symptoms around the scar on his scalp. As a result, Travis had surgery to remove a portion of his skull. During this surgery, the doctor took a biopsy the area where the tumor had been removed. He then prescribed intravenous antibiotic treatments. Travis had to function without part of his skull for three months while he received these treatments. Unfortunately, those results confirmed the Cancer was back and this time it was a Stage 4 Glioblastoma. At that time Travis began a treatment plan of taking an oral chemotherapy pill & having MRI scans every 2 months to check for change.
On August 9, 2012, Cancer growth was detected which meant the chemotherapy pill was no longer working. Currently, Travis is experiencing frequent seizures, immobility of his right hand, arm, leg, and foot as well as difficulties with speech. At this time he is no longer able to work.
Family and close friends of Travis are hosting a benefit to help him and his family with medical and living expenses. The Travis Burkman Benefit will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Heidelberg's North Bar & Grill. There will be a live band, silent auction, raffle and 10% of all proceeds from food and beverage purchases that evening will be contributed to the benefit.
In order to make this event a success, we are looking to businesses for support. We are asking for a donation of any item, service, or gift card you would be willing to supply. If you prefer to contribute a monetary gift instead, the Travis Burkman Donation Fund has been set up and contributions can be made at or mailed to any Union Bank location. Please know any contribution would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for supporting the Travis Burkman Family!

HERITAGE NEBRASKA SELECTS HIDDEN TREASURES FOR 2012
Nebraska's historical diversity is showcased in Heritage Nebraska's 2012 selections of Destination Places, Hidden Treasures and Fading Places.
A statewide call for nominations produced scores of entries, with judges selecting 37 historic sites for recognition.
Destination Places are museums and historical sites that serve tourists with high-quality interpretation, services and offerings of special events. In the first year for the new category six museums and historic places were selected for honors. The Destination selections include Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, Grand Island; Lewis & Clark Country, from Rulo to Lynch; Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History, Hastings; Camp Creek Threshers Heritage Ground and Threshers Show, Waverly; Wessels Living History Farm, York and all of Nebraska's State Historical Parks.
Fading Places serve to remind us of important places that are being lost. In the Fading Places category, judges recognized the Prague Presbyterian Church, representing Nebraska's many small rural churches, and the former Bartley High School, representing small rural schools.
The largest category, by far, was Hidden Treasures. These are historic places of merit which are worthy of greater notice and visitations.
The 2012 Hidden Treasure selections are:
Auburn - Legion Memorial Park. Beatrice - Historic Downtown District. Bellevue - Historic Log Cabin and Burlington Railroad Depot. Bennington - Oft-Gordon House. Broken Bow - Arrow Hotel & Suites. Cozad - Robert Henri Museum and Historical Walkway. Crofton - Argo Hotel. Danbury - Depot Museum. Elmwood - G.A.R. Veterans Museum. Genoa - U.S. Indian School Interpretive Center. Henderson - Mennonite Heritage Park Kearney - Classic Car Collection and Robert M. Merryman Performing Arts Center. Lincoln - Joyo Theater, National Museum of Roller Skating and Pioneer Park Nature Center. Madison - Historic Presbyterian Center.
