Four OCGS members, including Barb Wilhelm and Mary Hanke,
attended the 36th annual Nebraska State Genealogical Society
Conference in Grand Island over the weekend. Beth Foulk was
the main speaker. In addition to her "day" job, she is a volunteer at
the Midwest Genealogy Center near Independence, MO. Devra
Dragos from the Nebraska Library Commission introduced us to
the Nebraska Memories project and explained how to navigate
on the NebraskaAccess site. Nathan Musgrave presented diaries
from early settlers on the Mormon Trail, which related natural
history along with everyday happenings. Gary Zabokrtsky had
the audience participate in his presentation of "Wagon Train
Life on the Oregon-California Trail". Past president, Floyd
Smith, introduced the society's new website,
www.NESGS.org and the special new features that have been
added. We came home a lot smarter than when we left!

DRUMS OF THE WORLD

On Sunday, May 12, at 2:30 PM, the Schoolhouse Performance Series presents "Drums of the World", with Michael Fitzsimmons, percussionist and award winning composer. This concert will feature rare instruments from Switzerland called Hang – reminiscent of the steel drums of Trinidad. Incorporating the Hang with over 30 years' experience as a composer and performer, Michael has spellbound audiences with the beautiful, other worldly sounds of these unique and intriguing instruments. Michael is a solo artist with the Nebraska Arts Council's Touring Program, performing in schools, communities, and corporate settings. As a master teaching artist with University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Arts Are Basic, and a resident teaching artist with Nebraska Arts Council, Fitzsimmons provides programs for music and story as a way of learning at many regional schools. Michael is a leader of full day music workshops with G.A.T.E.(Grief and the Arts Training Experience) for therapists, school teachers, hospital teams, and individual groups. He is a skilled performer of diverse percussion instruments including drums, African instruments, Mbira (thumb piano), Plains Indian flutes, Brazilian percussion flutes, various bamboo flutes. The concert will be followed by a drum circle. Michael's drum circles are a "hit" with young and old alike! The concert will be downstairs in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, and followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers. Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $1.00 for children. Seating is limited. For more information, write to Greenblatt & Seay, The Old Schoolhouse, P.O. The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.
