Another County Fair is in the books. The flowers were
abundant, and WOW!, the vegetables were incredible.
We especially liked Eloise Stubbendeck's huge cabbage,
and Brody Brandt's "Best Dressed Zucchini.
Weather wise, it had to be one of the nicest in several years.
It was a late start but the garden at the Western Wilhelm Outpost
has been outdoing itself.

Zesty bread & butter pickles, spaghetti sauce, curried
pickles and pickled peppers
There were also some beautiful quilts from local quilt makers.
Barb Fey, from Palmyra, won the overall prize with her
cross-stitched roses quilt, it was gorgeous!

On a recent outing, someone asked me about Daniel Sweet, who
is buried in the Unadilla Cemetery, and whose stone is marked
"Black Hawk War". I knew absolutely nothing about that war,
so of course I went on line. To make a short story even shorter,
the settlers wanted Indian land (east of the Mississippi) and
Black Hawk of the Sauk tribe, fought to keep it. The first
battle at Stillman's Run was May 13, 1832 and ended with
the Massacre at Bad Axe on 8-2-1832. One item caught
my attention: Abraham Lincoln's brief military service
included this war. Now to the questions this brings to light:
how did Daniel Sweet end up in the Unadilla Cemetery?
And how young was he when he enlisted, having died 63
years later in 1895? If you figure it out, let me know!

Peggy Leefers reports: The Library Open House featured
a showing of some of the 65 children's books received from
the Libri Foundation, artwork from the Children's Summer
Art Camp, and a gift presentation. Amanda Davis was on hand
to show some of the work done by area children using mixed
mediums. Darin and Shane Ziemann presented a $2000
check to the library in memory of their parents, Trixie and
Russ Ziemann. A plaque to commemorate their generosity
will be installed later this fall. As many of you know, Trixie
was one of the original organizers to help start the library
in 1997. These gifts will move the library forward in a positive
way. She also states: "We are so fortunate to live in a small
community who supports our efforts to serve the children
and adults in the area."
Thank YOU Peggy, for all your
hard work.
