Friday, 1-23-1914, The Otoe Union:

Jud Russell of Mound City, Kansas, was moving back to

Unadilla. W.F. Yeigh purchased the Hupmobile at the Clarence

Witt sale for $835. A new homestead law was passed in the

state of Wyoming allowing a free homestead of 320 acres for

a $22.50 registration fee. That also enabled the purchase of

adjoining government pasture land for $1.25/acre, up to

160 acres. The editor noted the depot was selling a lot of tickets

to Wyoming. Ray DuBois wrote he was well pleased with his

Colorado farm and with the outlook for the next year, stating

their was plenty of moisture and the ground had a fine

coating of snow.

Mahoney State Park Opens 2014 With 'Always A Bridesmaid'

Ashland, NE [January 16, 2014] -  Mahoney State Park announces that KBC Productions will open the comedy, “Always a Bridesmaid,” at the Kountze Memorial Theater on Saturday, January 18.  The story is written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten.  Four girlfriends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their Senior Prom: to be in each other's weddings…no matter what.  More than thirty years later, these Southern friends-for-life are determined to honor that vow.

The classmates include Brandy Palatas and Kathleen Smith (Papillion), Sharon Kryger (La Vista) and Melinda Mead (Plattsmouth).  Brenda Jones (Louisville) and Samantha Colbert (Lincoln) complete the rest of the cast.  The play is produced by KBC Productions and directed by Kevin Colbert.  Performance dates are January 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 31 and February 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16.  Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30PM and Sundays are at 2:00PM.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under.  For reservations contact Mahoney State Park at 402-944-2523 ext. 7122.

 Penguin

LINCOLN, NE (January 21, 2014)— With the Bronco’s recent success and the buzz about Peyton Manning’s frequent use of the word Omaha, Nebraska Tourism wanted to do something to thank Mr. Manning for all of the shout-outs. After much thought about what would be an appropriate way to thank Peyton, Nebraska Tourism reached out to one of our partners to name something very special after the amazing quarterback. What is it?

It’s not a bridge, or a building, or a stadium, a forest or a museum….

It’s a cute little penguin chick that hatched on December 27, 2013 and currently weighs 1.26 pounds at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Zoo Director Dennis Pate commented, “When Nebraska Tourism reached out to us about this idea, we thought it would be a really “cool” way to say thanks to Mr. Manning for using the word Omaha in his pre-snap chants. We hope that Mr. Manning and his family will consider coming to Nebraska to say hi to his namesake sometime in the near future.”

“I think the whole world knows how much Nebraskan’s love football, so it’s fun to hear such a great quarterback chanting out our largest city’s name hundreds of times per game. We get a kick out of it and are happy for Peyton and his team. We wish them continued success in all that they do,” commented Nebraska Tourism’s Executive Director, Kathy McKillip.
