Unadilla Bill did NOT see his shadow!

Sunday morning, February 2nd, at 7:34 a.m. the Groundhog

Central Committee and guests witnessed Unadilla Bill coming

"outside" and he did NOT see his shadow.

Good news: we should have an early spring!

Bad news: the temperature was 1 degree - BRRR!

On Saturday morning, February 1, the day started off slow due to

weather predictions. The crowd was smaller than usual at the

Community Center and the Quilt Show was cancelled due to

illness. About 70 enjoyed the presentation by Darrel Draper,

"Daniel Freeman, America's First Homesteader".

As usual, he used folks in the audience to help tell the story, and

was generous in his time afterwards in answering many questions.

We are so lucky to receive funding from the Nebraska Humanities

Council and the Unadilla Area Fund/Foundation for these annual,

historical presentations. There were lots of new vendors this year

and Prelle Catering provided a wonderful lunch. The silent auction

closed at noon. There was a nice collection of donated items.

The Christian Church  reports that this year was their largest

Bake Sale ever!

Thanks to Peggy Leefers, Corinne Zahn, Larry Larson, Donna

Crownover and their helpers for their work at the Community

Center.

At the Duncan Building, soup, jerky, and Spam entries had to be

checked in by parade time.

The "Best use of Spam" contest was new this year and there were

lots of "exotic" recipes! Soup winners: Green Chili from Betty

Van Amburg won the Chili Division; Asian Vegetable Soup (with a

perfect score) from Ninajean Rohlfs won the Vegetable Division;

Chicken Brunswich Stew from Patty Beecham won the "Other"

Division. Jerky winners: Pressley Wilhelm, 1st; Lane Rohlfs, 2nd;

and Reagan Wilhelm, 3rd. Spam winners: Steve Cooper's

Spaghetti and Spam Meatballs won first place, and Rick

Wassenberg's Spam & Jalapeno Quesadillas won second place.

Congratulations everyone! And thanks to Michele Capps for

organizing this event.

The parade start was delayed just a few minutes as the wind gave

the Lincoln Parachute Club jumpers a hard time.

The temperature at 1:00 p.m. was 26 degrees and there were 31

entries. Continuing a long tradition, the American Legion and VFW

Color Guard led the way.

Thanks to Bill Farmer and Perry Stoner for their "Masters of Ceremony"

duties in announcing parade entries and to the organizers down by

Dan's Tire for lining everyone up in the right place.

After the parade it was back to the Duncan Building. Also new

this year was an "auction" for the Groundhog Loyalty Basket

conducted by Bill Farmer. It was won by Maureen Vogt.

Then the drawing for the Groundhog Commemorative Rifle

was held with Kevin Randall holding the lucky ticket.

Larry Larson, Donna Crownover, and Maureen Vogt did a great

job there. The beautiful music was provided by Ninajean Rohlfs.

The King and Queen Coronation was held at The Bar.

This year's King is Roland Rodaway and the Queen is

Kathyrn Speth Romine. (Roland is our oldest "Royal" to date.)

This contest raised over $2300 for the Fire & Rescue. We would

like to thank everyone who donated in support of this great cause.

Other activities were held at the Methodist Church, Unadilla

Hardware, TR Mart, The Bar, and Andersons. Thanks to our

fearless leader and head groundhog, Bob Brandt. Thanks to

Dwight Kastens and Arlin Rohlfs for tackling the streets and

sidewalks. Thanks to Bob Wilhelm for putting up with me during

Groundhog week, and thanks to everyone else involved. This

type of event "takes a village" and almost everyone in our village

participates in one way or the other. Thank you seems hardly

enough, but thank you, thank you, thank you.

We had a ball and we hope to see you next year

on February 7, 2015!

(More photos can be found under the events tab above.)

Get well wishes to Chuck McGowan.
