Augustus John Hinrichsen arrived 12-11-2014, weighing
in at 7 lb. 5 oz. and 19 3/4" long. He is the son of Vincent
and Jessica Hinrichsen and was welcomed home by
his big sister, Charlotte. Congratulations and
best wishes to all of you!

Thanks to these All Fund Drive contributors:
Delbert & Dorothy Eickhoff, Arlin & Nina Jean Rohlfs,
June Tipken, Craig & Chris Kimbell, Dan & Sondra
Petersen, Eloise Stubbendeck, and Bruce & Teresa
Liesemeyer. You made Santa smile!

Here's hoping you have a wonderful Christmas holiday and
that Santa finds your house OK! You can bend old St. Nick's
ear this Saturday morning at the Duncan Building,
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
The Unadilla Area Fund met Tuesday, December 9,
at the Community Library. The planning began for Groundhog
Day. Our raffle prize this year will be a grill and some meat
to go on it! (Just a reminder, it is the first Saturday
in February!)

Barb Wilhelm and Mary Hanke attended the Mary Katherine
Goddard DAR chapter meeting on Wednesday,
December 10. They met at "The Bistro", the small restaurant
on the campus of Metro Community College, in the
culinary arts building. The food was delicious and the
business meeting was short. Then the members went
to the Mormon Winter Quarters and viewed the
Gingerbread display and contest. The entries were
amazing: the Eiffel tower, Robinson Crusoe's tree house,
and lots of snow angels. We counted 35 different items
used just on the roofs. I never would have thought of
cutting up bubble gum strips for shingles and you can't
imagine all the things created out of Chex mix!

Condolences to the Matt Capps family on the loss of
Matt's father, Leonard.
About 5 years ago, everyone was planting Scotch pines.
We had 4 and now the last one has died.

Craig Wanamaker, Brody Hitzemann, and Bob Brandt
(Craig has never missed a Groundhog Day celebration)
Who could believe that on December 13 of any year
we could be planting trees? That's just what we did last
Saturday at the Western Wilhelm Outpost.

Thanks to Bob Brandt
for the trees: white pine, Black Hills Spruce, and our
favorite "Ponderosa" pine. The grandsons assisted and
decided if your name is Bob you must be pretty smart about
nature, and especially about raccoons (no, we did not
see any Mom.)

Sunday, December 14, was the holiday meal with family
at Good Samaritan. It was good to see the holiday spirit
spread throughout the room. The food was great and a
big thank you to the staff who worked so hard to make it
happen.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 12-18-2014, The Otoe Union:
"Figures prepared by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture
indicate that for the last 5 years Nebraska has produced
1.6% of the nations apple crop." Henry Langenberg also
bought a farm in the Red River Valley near Fritz Borchers.
"Toys and Books for little folks at Farnsworth's." (Drug Store).
The war in Europe had opened a market for light weight horses:
15 hands high, around 1100 lbs., a "solid dark color", and
well broken with good eyes and good wind.
