Sunday, May 17th, about 30 members and parents of the
Better Beef Producers 4-H Club helped pick up branches,
and mulched trees in the Unadilla Park/Arboretum. They worked
from 4-6 p.m., followed by their meeting and a picnic in the
Park Shelter. Thanks to sponsors Keith & Deb Moss, and
to all the 4-Hers and parents for their help. Bob Brandt
reports their work was outstanding!

The Unadilla Alumni dinner will be held on Saturday, May 23,
at the Unadilla Community Center, in suite #2 (next to the
Village Office.) Come in the north door and follow the signs!
Social hour begins at 6 p.m. The new history rooms will be
open and they include a veteran's display, the current and
old "miniature" Unadilla, and local businesses and school
memorabilia. The carry in dinner begins at 7p.m., with fried
chicken furnished. Please bring a dish if you can, and
come and have a good time!
On Monday, May 25th, the Unadilla Library and
Thrivent, will sponsor a light lunch in the Unadilla
Gym, form 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The menu includes
sloppy joes, polish sausage, hot dogs, coleslaw, chips,
dessert, and drinks. A free will offering is the only fee.
Proceeds will go to the new history rooms to help cover
start up costs and the purchase of items needed for
displaying historical items and mementos. Every one is
welcome! The history rooms will also be open that day,
and we encourage your comments and ideas.
Did you know -- your Unadilla Library now has
"Golden Sower" books? The Golden Sower program,
sponsored by the Nebraska Library Association,
recommends books for young people. Their goal is
to sow seeds which will" stimulate children's thinking;
introduce different types of literature; encourage
independent reading; and foster an appreciation
for excellence in writing and illustrating. Stop in and
check out these new books!

Sunday, May 17, members of the Otoe County
Genealogical Society and a few visitors, met at the
Otoe City Cemetery. President Mary Hanke gave a
program on the many different families and talked about
those affected by the Easter Sunday tornado of 1913.
Visiting this cemetery many times, I am always drawn
to the grave of Sylvia Teide, a victim of that tornado.
A big thank you to Bonnie Boldt and Barb Wolf for
their attendance and assistance! We can learn so much
from our past, and doesn't it put things in perspective!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO
Friday, 5-21-1915, The Otoe Union:
"A special train to the Otoe County 8th grade graduation
exercises will leave Unadilla at 8:00 and Syracuse at
8:20 for Nebraska City, and returning in the afternoon
leaving Nebraska City at 4:50." Friday, May 14th, was the
last day of the term at Shullsdale School. (District #72, it was
still open for the 1942-1943 school year.) The children gave a
program followed by a picnic and games; Miss Helen Hopp
was the teacher. Broiling chickens, hatched in February,
were bringing 33 cents/pound on the Unadilla Market.

Free fiddle and Harmonica workshops will take place on Saturday, May 23, at the National Homestead Monument in Beatrice, Nebraska. At 10 AM, there will be a FREE fiddle workshop led by championship fiddler Deborah Greenblatt. At 11:00 AM, there will be a FREE harmonica workshop led by multi-instrumentalist, David Seay. These FREE workshops are part of a full day of fun and free activities during the Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival, formerly known as the Monumental Fiddle Championship. Greenblatt & Seay are Master Artists with the Nebraska Arts Council, and participants in the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau.

SDA Alumni Banquet. You need to return the portion of
the flyer to Laurie Kuenning along with payment, and you
will be added to the reservation list. Flyers can be found at
several locations around Syracuse and Unadilla or you can
contact Laurie directly. School tours start at 5:30, Registration
and Social Hour 6:00 - 7:00, and Banquet starts at 7:00.
Class photos will be taken afterwards.
