There's a nice patriotic message just west of the corner of Hwy #2

and 16th Road, on the north side. "USA" is disked into the side

of the hill.

Worldwide wine gurus to gather in Nebraska City

Wine

LINCOLN, Neb. (November 9, 2015)— For the first time ever the VitiNord conference is being held in the United States, and right here in Nebraska. This week, Nebraska City, Neb. will host the International Viticulture & Enology conference that happens every three years. The four day event will highlight the research and practices being used in Northern wine growing climates.

“Being selected as the first site in the United States to host this conference was a great accomplishment,” said Barry McFarland, VitiNord Planning Committee Member andco-owner of Mac’s Creek Winery and Vineyard in Lexington. McFarland added, “This would have never been possible without the great partnerships that we have in Nebraska between the wine industry, Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Tourism Commission.  Everyone is ready to show our participants from around the globe what a great location they are coming to in Nebraska.”

Eighteen states and ten different countries will be represented at the conference. In previous years it has been held in places like Germany, Latvia and Quebec. The sold out event will bring 230 participants to the Lied Lodge, Thursday through Saturday. There, 38 different presenters from all across the globe will share strategies and information that can be used in other vineyards and/or wineries.

Tony Aspler is one of two keynote speakers, Thursday morning he’ll discuss Building a Strong Model for Cool & Cold Climate Wine/Grape Industry Growth: Lessons Learned from Nova Scotia Success. Aspler has been a wine writer for the past 40 years.  He was the wine columnist for The Toronto Star for 21 years and has authored 17 books on wine and food.

Dr. Paul Huttner will lead a keynote on Thursday on USA Climate Change – Catastrophe or Opportunity for Viticulture. Huttner is the chief meteorologist for Minnesota Public Radio, he has also worked at TV and radio stations in Minneapolis, Tucson and Chicago.

Each night participants will enjoy wine tastings of a different theme; worldwide wines, United States wines and Nebraska wines. The conference will wrap up on Saturday witha tour of Soaring Wings Vineyard & Brewing, near Springfield, Neb. and Whiskey Run Creek Vineyard & Winery in Brownville, Neb. along with a farm to table supper in Syracuse, Neb.
