UNADILLA ALUMNI DINNER

The Unadilla Alumni Dinner was held at the Duncan Building with 41 in attendance. The theme for the evening was Good Old School Days. Hosts for the evening was the class of 1955 consisting of Colleen (Beckard) Zenisek, Kathryn (Botsford) Callaway, Jane (Lemka) Lewis, Janice (Helm) Thomson, Larry & Marsha Bartling, and Larry & Rose Marie Halvorsen.

The evening began with a social hour of visiting with old friends and classmates. The flag salute was led by Janice Thomson, the Doxology was led by Kathryn Callaway. A delicious carry in dinner was enjoyed by all. The Alumni Association furnished the chicken again this year and a $3.00 door fee was charged.

The program was led by Kathryn Callaway. She gave a history of District #20 of Unadilla, Nebraska. In 1869 H.P. Farnsworth organized and circulated a petition, required by law and District #20 was started in 1870. There were 4 families and 11 children of school age. As years went on changes were made as to where the school was to be located.

The twon was building and improvements were needed. On May 14, 1914, a bond issue of $5000 for a brick school house passed. On 2-23-1915, the 11th grade was added. The 12th grade was added in 1926. Graduates organized an Alumni Association in 1931. Ten years later a Parent/Teacher Association was started. A hot lunch program was started in 1945 at 15 cents per pupil. Marie Stilwell was the first cook. In 1951 the school district incorporated a Kindergarten class. A special bond voting issue for a new gymnasium and auditorium with class rooms was passed for the present school. The last graduating class was in 1958 with 4 people in the class.

The honored classes were 1941, 1946, 1951, and 1956. The 1941 class was represented by Berdean (Stoner) West and Glen Wyatt. The class of 1946 had 3 members present: John Goering, Nyla (West) Lorensen, and Darline (Callaway) Thoms. The class of 1951 was represented by Delores (Clark) Schriner. No one attended from the class of 1956. Several of these members told of stories they remembered of their high school days and were of interest to us all.

Jean Lucas read the minutes of last year's meeting. A treasurer's report showed a current balance as of May 28, 2016, of $404.42.

The tables were decorated with gift bags containing what would be in a school lunch pail. Pictures of the school, year books, scrap books, old lanterns, school bells, lunch boxes, and "U" emblems were on display. It was wondered when the Red Cardinal mascot was started and Larry Bartling found as near as could be remembered it was when Harold Reed was superintendent 1939-1943.

Jan Thomson read the poem "Spring Program" and also the class prophecy of 1955. The gift bags decorating the tables were given as door prizes.

Hosts for the 2017 alumni dinner will be the classes of 1956, 1957, and 1958, to be held at the Duncan Building.

Friday, 6-16-2016, The Otoe Union:

"Fred Wallen is the owner of a new 7 passenger Buick, which

he purchased from Fritz Nicklaus." Warren Lincoln and family

moved to Wichita, Kansas. "Charles and Will Dorman lost 9

head of steers by lightning, 6 of them falling in one bunch."

Fred Dreeszen died and was buried in Hope Lutheran Cemetery.
