Here's hoping all your family makes it home for Thanksgiving
safely - have a wonderful time! The day after, of course, signals
the start of the Christmas shopping frenzy. Please remember to
patronize local businesses on Saturday, November 26,
Small Business Saturday.

Congratulations to new grandparents Rich & Kathy Lechner!
Walker Ray arrived 11-21-2016 and we're sure he's a
little cutie!

Get well wishes to Bruce Hassler.

Always find something I need when I stop at Nitty Gritty
Gas & Thrift. Today I found Sleighbell wine from the
James Arthur vineyard. It's the best!

Happy 90th birthday wishes to Jody Clark,
who will celebrate 11-27. Cards may be sent
to her in care of Good Samaritan.

Another successful Barn Quilt class was held last Tuesday
evening, 11/15/16. There were 12 participants each creating
a beautiful work of art. It was so much fun to listen to the
comments as each person worked on their project. Fun was
had by all! More classes are planned for 2017 - be sure
to watch the announcements.

Did you know that since Lincoln's presidency, Thanksgiving
was always celebrated the last Thursday in November? In 1939
that would have been the 30th. Retailers campaigned for a
change to move it back a week to the 23rd, fearing a shortened
shopping season would wreak havoc on business coffers. The
public didn't want to change it because it disrupted vacation
plans, football schedules, and calendar production. Since it
wasn't a federal law, the states could chose which day the wanted.
So, in 1939 and 1940, there was a "Republican Thanksgiving"
and a "Roosevelt's Thanksgiving" also known as "Franksgiving".
In 1941 Congress passed a new law that officially set the date
as the fourth Thursday in November.
The Village has received a grant to map water and sewer lines.
Soon you will see flags appearing in lawns for those locations.
Water lines will be marked with blue flags and sewer lines
will be marked with green flags. Questions? Call the
Village Office at 402-828-5355.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 11-24-1916, The Otoe Union:
"George Zellers husked 90 bushels of corn in one day and
drove eight miles to the field and back." The Owen Wall family
moved into the Lunsford property across the street from the
Bank. A Mr. Reitz was the new manager of the Duff Elevator
and had moved his family to Unadilla. There was an interesting
article on the British horse and mule supply station in Lathrop,
Missouri. There were usually 40,000 animals on hand and it
cost $28,000 per day to feed them all. After the animals were
shod in the front and passed inspection, they were forwarded
by train to Canadian shipping points. The animals average
life expectancy was only 3 days after they reached
"the firing line."
