The Otoe County Genealogical Society met Saturday, March 25,
at the Syracuse Library. Following the business meeting, Chris
and Gail Effken, Friend, Nebraska, gave a wonderful account of
their trips to Northwest Germany. Chris also passed along some
valuable research information and web site addresses. Twenty-
five people attended. Light refreshments were served.
Village Maintenance would like to remind everyone that the
only things accepted at the burn pile are trees, branches, and
unfinished lumber (no nails). No leave or garbage please. That
could make us lose our permit with the state, and there no
longer would be a burn pile.

There was a nice turnout for the Rescue Squad Soup
Luncheon Sunday. They would like to thank
everyone who participated.
Thanks to Dwight Kastens and Jean Lucas for their donations
to the History Room. They are most appreciated.
Continued get well wishes to Ruth Wilhelm, Gerry Davis, and Bruce
Hassler. We are so glad you are back home and doing great
Rose Marie Brandt.
Don't forget the Legion Continuous Membership Dinner is
this Friday night at the Syracuse Country Club. Hope you've
made your reservations already!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 3-30-1917, The Otoe Union:
"Claire Wall loaded his car for Burlington, Colorado. We wish him
and his family abundant success in their western home." Ernest
Stouffer and family moved to Tennant, Iowa, where he would take
up his trade as a barber. Anna Saunders, Cripple Creek, Colorado,
brought examples of semi-precious gems from the Crystal Peak
Gem Company of that place, and of which she was president.
"It's worth any person's while to see this collection...and hear from
her own lips the story of this remarkable enterprise, it's develop-
ment and possibilities."
