Mary Gartner. Continued wishes to Bruce Hassler and

Some of you may know how partial I am to police officers
nationwide, but especially those in Nebraska. "Nebraska
City Police Officer Gary R. White was shot and killed at
about 3:45 a.m. on Saturday July 9, 1977, at the rear of
the police department in Nebraska City. Officer White and
Officer Pete Rishel were attempting to contact a subject
driving a pickup truck in the alley. The officers believed the
driver of the truck was wanted in connection with a
domestic assault that had occurred earlier. As the officers
approached the truck, the driver produced a shotgun and
fired at both officers. Officer White was struck under his
protective vest and collapsed. Officer Rishel was wounded
but was able to return fire. The suspect escaped but was
arrested near York on I-80 at a rest area. Officer White was
24 years old and single at the time of his death. White had
been a police officer for only nine days." Heroes remembered
are never forgotten - please remember him.
Did you know we discard enough motor oil per year
to fill over 100 super tankers? Talk about a
carbon footprint!

Thanks so much to the anonymous donor who paid
to put extra railings on the bleachers at the park. What
a great thing to do for all us "oldsters"!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 7-13-1917, The Otoe Union:
From the editor: "Alien citizens of allied nations in this
country should not be allowed to remain in safety here
while our own men are sent abroad to fight. "Put 'em in
the army or send 'em home." Ellis West and son Harvey,
Tom Lucas, Ora Baker and Howard Mortimore shipped a
double deck load of sheep to the Omaha market.

Look what Corinne Zahn found in the planter box in front of the
Post Office - aren't they cute?
