The official Groundhog celebration was held Saturday,
February 3, and it was a day that started off chilly, but as a
south wind blew, warmed up considerably.
There were new quilts displayed in the hallway.

The gymnasium was once again filled to the maximum with
vendors of all kinds.

The Resource Room, History Room, and Veterans Room
had a huge amount of visitors. As always, Corey Schulz
captivated the children's attention with his trains. The Better
Beef Producers 4-H Club served lunch and by all accounts,
it was yummy!

Thanks so much to Donna Crownover, Sue Saathoff,
and Glenda Willnerd for all their help
There was a Silent Auction and raffle sales, and the Library
provided children with goodie bags until they ran out.

Chris Sayre
Chris Sayre, an amazing entertainer, performed for a crowd
of about 150. He plays the guitar, mandolin, accordian,
dulcimer, concertina, and saw, and came to us through the
Humanities Nebraska Speaker's Bureau. And what a
treat he was!

Jean's Birthday Cake
Sayre started off the program with everyone in the gym
singing "Happy Birthday" to Jean Lucas. Then the Nebraska
song and then, most importantly, the Groundhog Song.

Playing the saw
Sayre gave a short history or anecdote for each selection
and the hour zipped by!
The Methodist Church also provided a noon meal, as did
the Boy Scouts at the Duncan Building. The Nut Grower's
Association had a booth and as usual, had yummy treats and
nut based items; the Girl Scouts had Groundhog T-shirts
for sale, and all this was accompanied by Nina Jean Rohlfs
on her keyboard.

Nina Jean Rohlfs
Jeannie Steinkuhler headed up the soup, Spam, and jerky
contests. The judges were Cassie Royal, Mike Weyers, and
Bob Wilhelm.
And the winners are:
Chili 1st: Marcie Gartner
Chili 2nd: Chuck Kreifels
Other 1st: Lane Rohlfs
Other 2nd: Kevin Rohlfs
Spam 1st: Kathryn Romine
Spam 2nd: Steve Cooper
Jerky 1st: Helen McKenzie
Jerky 2nd: Pressley Wilhelm
Retha Neeman was the grand prize winner of the Raffle
and Walt Scharp was runner up. Congratulations to all!
Also thanks to Maureen Vogt for all her help.
Leading the parade was the Color Guard comprised of
members from Massie-Richards American Legion Post #100
and VFW Post #5547.

Keith Goering, Bob Wilhelm, Ron Wenninghoff, Gerald
Neeman, and Bonnie Carlson
There were 45 entries this year, down from 55 last year,
but the parade lasted longer!
Grand Marshals were residents of Unadilla over age 90.

Driven by John Moss, a 1929 Franklin 135 sedan; air-cooled, no
radiator. Front: Rose Brandt & John Moss

Back: Jack Stilwell, Lois Ebert, Roland Rodaway
This year there was a 3-way tie for 1st place: Girl Scouts, Boy
Scouts and Andrew Kimbell. No drones this year but 4
professional photographers, including Nebraska Life Magazine.
Parade attendees were about 400 people, stretching from
Dan's Tire to Moss' truck shed; there were cars everywhere!

Thanks so much to Bill Farmer and Perry Stoner for their
"Master of Ceremonies" duties. Sadly, Bill Farmer is retiring
after 20+ year and will be greatly missed! Gov. Ricketts was
absent this year as he was off in California for the christening
of the U.S.S. Omaha.
During the intermission between the Parade and the
Coronation, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum planted
a vibernum shrub in the Southwest section of the
Mainstreet streetscape.

Then it was off to The Bar. This year it was a major battle
between Betsy Pavelka and Rachel Zahn, reportedly
raising over $5000 between them; total raised was $6700.
Wow, that's an all time record! Congratulations to Rachel
Zahn and Ron Fechner, 2018 Groundhog Royalty.

2018 Grounhog Queen Rachel Zahn & King Ron Fechner
We would like to thank everyon who donated in support
of this great cause; the money helps fund the Fire & Rescue
and the Unadilla Area Fund.
New this year, the day ended with some great music by
three awesome and talented guys:

Randy Baker

John Moss

Pat Glenn
The place was rocking!
Thanks also to Dwight Kastens and Arlin Rohlfs for cleaning up
the streets and sidewalks, and for taking care of all those last
minute details. And to Corinne Zahn and the Village Board for
everything they do. As I say every year, this event "takes a
village" and almost everyone in our little town participates in
one way or another. Thanks you seems hardly enough, but
thank you anyway. We had a great time and we hope to see
you next year on Saturday, February 2, 2019. It will be the
actual Groundhog Day - start making your party plans now!
(All photos that come in will be posted on the "Events" tab
above. Please note this is a work in progress!)

Get well wishes to Sheila Glathar and continued get well
wishes to Keith Kimbell, Rich Lechner, and Char Burkhart.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 2-8-1918, The Otoe Union:
School was closed for the second week in a row due to the
shortage of coal. Mrs. Guy Wehland was visiting her husband
who was stationed at Ft. Omaha. Famous Rodgers developed
a case of small pox. "From the appearance of the weather the
proverbial groundhog failed to appear. I suppose it was owing
to it being meatless day." Dorothy M. Crownover, daughter of
Wm. E. Crownover, was married to Francis E. Orton.
