Karen Johns and Carol Gobber
Saturday the Otoe County Genealogical Society met at the
Syracuse Library to hear a presentation by Karen Johns about
teaching at a rural school. It was fun and very interesting. Of all
those who attended, only two didn't go to a rural school. Recess
stories were shared as well as outhouse "issues", school
programs and picnics, 8th grade examinations and graduations,
and learning then versus learning now. If you get a chance to
hear Johns speak, don't miss it! Thank you Carol Gobber
for your assistance!

Condolences to the many family and friends of
Nora Snyder, who passed away. She was laid to
rest at Osage Cemetery.
Sunday, the Boardman clan gathered at the Unadilla Park
shelter to welcome the newest additions to the family: Sutton
Sabatka, Beckem Landwehr, and Mickey Loy Boardman.

The Oldest Generation: Barb, Mary, Jim, Larry, Rod
All five of the "oldest genereation" attended, and as usual
there was more than enough to eat. Everyone commented on
our beautiful park and shelters, and the playground equipment
got lots of use. We had hoped for a game of "workup" but
in the end it was football and soccer. LOTS of photos were
taken and heirlooms were passed down to the next
generation.

Steve Vodicka reminds us that the Rescue Squad will
be holding a garage sale in the Park on Saturday,
October 13. They are accepting donations of items to sell
and all proceeds will go towards the purchase of the self
loading gurney.

Continued get well wishes to Rose Marie Brandt, Sandy
Denton, and Phil Willnerd.
Some of you have received a letter from the American
Cancer Society asking for a donation for the Unadilla All
Fund Drive - this is NOT connected to our drive. We're not
asking you not to donate if you wish, but asking that you
remember our drive is coming up soon and the money we
collect stays in our community, theirs does not.

Did you know...Nebraska has aquifers below it? If poured over
the surface of the state, the water in those aquifers would have
a depth of 37.9 feet. The state has 96,547 registered, active
irrigation wells supplying water to over 8.3 million acres of
harvested cropland and pasture. Of the total cropland
harvested in 2012, 44% was irrigated.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 9-20-1918, The Otoe Union:
"George (Shorty) Rose, the all around man, helped Paul
Hair Wednesday in the chicken business." Carson Davis and
family were moving to Frontier County. Mrs. Henry Massie
received a letter from her son, Billy, "Mother, I am at the front
somewhere along the line and every day sounds just like the
fourth of July...it was a year ago tonight that I left Unadilla.
I hope it is not another year before I see the little old town
again." (Billy was killed in France, 3-17-1919, never
having see home again.)
