It was a "real" Groundhog Day this year. Everyone started out at The Bar with a yummy breakfast and then "Bill" made his way outside for his annual prediction. He did not see his shadow, so we're in for an early spring!

The fog started rolling in almost immediately, but it was warm and clear inside the Community Center and the gym was packed with vendors. The History and Veterans Rooms had a constant flow of visitors, and as always, the little children were captivated by Corey Schulze's trains.

Donna Crownover, Glenda Willnerd, Sue Saathoff, Maureen Vogt
This year, along with goodie bags, the library presented an oral reading of "What's Going Down in Prairie Dog Town" by its author, Alan Bartels. He ended up giving two programs, one before and one after Chris Sayre's "Musical Smorgasbord".

A quick count determined there were between 175 and 200 people during peak times. Thanks so much to Donna Crownover, Glenda Wilnerd, Sue Saathoff and Maureen Vogt for overseeing the community center, silent auction and the drawings. And a big thank you to Better Beef Producers 4-H Club for serving lunch to hungry shoppers! The Methodist Church also provided a noon meal as did the Boy Scouts at the Duncan Building. Nina Jean Rohlfs provided live music again and when her keyboard threw a tantrum and died, she sent Arlan home for her tuba, grabbed Joel Douglass from the crowd, who happened to have his accordion, and polka music reigned supreme!

Judges: Mike Weyers, Cassie Royal, Bob Wilhelm
Jeannie Steinkuhler headed up the soup, spam and jerky contests. The judges were Mike Weyers, Cassie Royal and Bob Wilhelm. Winners: 1st Chile: Steve Cooper, 2nd Chile: John Cooper, 1st Other: Nina Jean Rohlfs, 2nd Other: Susanna Porter, 1st Jerky: Ike & Hayes West, 2nd Jerky: Harper Wilhelm, 1st Spam: Kathryn Romine, 2nd Spam: Nina Jean Rohlfs, 1st place drawing: Lee Clark, 2nd place drawing: Teresa Cooper, and 3rd place drawing: Holly Russell.

Eldon Halm, Bob Wilhelm, Tyler Potts, Ed Reed, Ralph Jay
Leading the parade was the Color Guard comprised of members of American Legion Post #100 and VFW Post #5547, Syracuse: Eldon Halm, Bob Wilhelm, Tyler Potts, Ed Reed and Ralph Jay.

Then came Grand Marshall, Alan Bartels, walking along side the "official" car, Bob Brandt's Falcon. The parade was a little shorter this year, but the attendance was about 500. For the first time their was a drone in the parade (it didn't throw any candy!), sponsored by Countryside Bank and piloted by Dave Hall's family. The Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts tied for 1st place and Wilhelm Family Farms, with 3 vehicles this year, came in second. Thanks so much to Perry Stoner and family for announcing the parade. (For a complete listing of entries and all the photos, go to the "Events" tab above and click on Groundhog Day 2019.) The heavy fog made for some amazing photos! Thanks to Dave Hall and crew for lining up the parade and keeping things running smooth.

Gov. Pete Ricketts, Queen Rachel Zeiger Ruehling, King Jack Stilwell
Then it was off to The Bar for the King and Queen Coronation. This year's winners were King: Jack Stilwell and Queen: Rachel Zeiger Ruehling, crowned this year by Gov. Pete Ricketts and witnessed by last year's royalty, King Ron Fechner and Queen Rachel Zahn. We thought last year was amazing, but once again the candidates broke the record and raised $11,098! Wow! Great job everyone! The committee would like to thank everyone who donated in support of this great cause; the money helps fund the Fire Dept., the Rescue Squad, and the Unadilla Area Fund.

Randy Baker, John Moss
Back by popular demand and an awesome trio: Randy Baker, John Moss and Pat Glen. They really can get the place rocking!

Pat Glenn
Thanks so much to Corinne Zahn and the Town Board for their support and help, and to Dwight Kastens and Arlin Rohlfs for clearing the streets and pushing that snow back. There's always some last minute details and minor hiccups, but after 31 years, it's taken in stride. As I say every year, this event "takes a village" and almost everyone in our little village participates in one way or another. Thank you seems hardly enough, but thank you anyway. We all had a great time and we hope to see you next year on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Get us on your calendar now!
