New OCGS Logo

Thanks to the Villag Board for allowing OCGS to use a room for all our records.

We have helped families from 7 different states in the last 30 days. Those who

have visited in person were delighted with the History and Veterans rooms also.

They always say how surprised they are to find their information in such a small

town, but by the time they leave they know how serious we are. When we're

finished, I point them in the direction of the Otoe County Museum of Memories.

Have YOU visited lately?

National Hot Dog Day

July 17th is National Hot Dog Day. A brief history: in the 13th century

an item called "Frankfurter Wuerstchen" was given to those celebrating

royal coronations in Germany. In the 1700's, a butcher began selling

"frankfurters" in Vienna. 1870 revealed a man named Charles Feldman

that began selling sausages inside rolls at Coney Island. Then in 1916,

Nathan Handwerker, an employee of Feldman, opened a stand on Coney

Island called Nathan's and undercharged Feldman, selling his "dog"

for 5 cents. Who knew???

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

 Abe Lincoln

Friday, 7-11-1919, The Otoe Union:

The Rural Carrier Examination for the Post Office was to be held in

Nebraska City. The editor interviewed Thomas Gannon, from Douglas,

who worked for Abraham Lincoln, cutting wood. He also hauled the first

rock for Lincoln's monument, and guarded and placed brick around the

house in Sprinfield, Illinois during the Civil War. (He was born in Ireland

and is buried in St. Martin's cemetery, south of Douglas.)
