PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
Thursday, October 17, 7:30 p.m. at Library
The Unadilla Area Fund met Tuesday, October 15, at the Community Library. Those present: Peggy Leefers, Corinne Zahn, Bob Brandt, Glenda Willnerd, Sue Saathoff, Donna Crownover and Barb Wilhelm. Guest speakers were: Jim Gustafson and Jason Kennedy from the Nebraska Community Foundation. The upcoming All Fund Drive was discussed, along with the reception in December and plans for Groundhog Day. Our speaker will be Jeff Barnes and his program will be: A Bad Man in a Better Place: Jesse James in Nebraska. Hope you all can join us!
Other items discussed were: placing a barn quilt at the Park, replacing the cooling unit in the Library, installation of a directory sign in front of the Community Center, installation of more benches at the park and park clean up and tree trimming this weekend with help from the local Boy Scouts. The next meeting will be Tuesday, December 3, before the reception at the Duncan Building.
The Flag Disposal Ceremony was held Tuesday evening, October 8, at the Post Home in Syracuse. There were about 50 patriots of all ages. Thank you to the Boy Scouts, Junior Law Cadet, Boy's & Girl's State representatives and members of Massie-Richards American Legion Post #100 and their Auxiliary. The high school kids are such an inspiration to us all.
After the meal a Quilt of Valor was presented to veteran Eugene Kraenow by his daughter, Marilyn Brinkhoff and her grandson. Thank you for your service Eugene!

Bob & I were planning on a trip to Scenic, South Dakota, this past weekend to replace the tombstone on my great-grandfather David Hopkins Fisk's grave. But in light of the historic snowstorm that buried the whole area, we headed east to Burlington, Iowa. My sister Mary went with us and our first stop was the "Axe Murder House" in Villisca, Iowa, and the cemetery there where Bob's great-great-grandparents are buried.
Then we visited Fisk, Trulock and Brooks graves in the Aspen cemetery at Burlington. Bob drove us down Snake Alley (I couldn't look) and we went down to the water front, which was mostly under water.
There are also some amazing homes and buildings in the waterfront district.
We crossed over the Mississippi and went to Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Mormon settlement in the "Flats". On the way home we stopped at the cemetery at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and found more Fisk relatives and of course, there's a wonderful little quilt shop there along with Iowa Wesleyan University.
We couldn't drive past Winterset, Iowa, without stopping at the new John Wayne Museum: "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!" We had went through the house where he was born many years ago, but the new museum has a little theater and some well thought out displays. I loved the old station wagon that had been "customized" for him - it even had a third row seat! But best of all was crossing the Missouri and turning on to H Road - we fit a lot of sightseeing into 2 days!
Condolences to the family and friends of Viola Wachter, who passed on October 9th. She and her sister, Dorothy, had their own cafe at one time and worked the early shift at Horstman's Cafe. Her fried chicken and plate-sized pancakes couldn't be beat. You will be missed Vi.
It was great to see all the family and old friends who came to the Duncan Building Sunday afternoon to celebrate the 100th birthday of Roland Ivan Rodaway. What a gracious and loving man; a great example to us all.

Friday, 10-17-1919, The Otoe Union:
"Frank Yeigh has begun the erection of the new bank building." (Farmer's State Bank, which was torn down a few years ago.) Dr. Fletcher Jack Farwell, formerly of Unadilla, died at Friend, NE, and was buried in their cemetery. Rev. Rowland W. Cloud relocated to Rock Springs, Wyoming. Sam Stoner became the owner of the James Doyle dray business. It was rumored that James would move to Paul, NE.

Recently I was in Nebraska City when I ran into an old friend. As we were visiting, another lady overheard that I used to live in Plattsmouth and showed me this photo. She said she lives in or near Percival, Iowa and after the recent flooding this photo was found on her property. Because of the background showing Steube's Jack and Jill, we determined it was taken in front of the former Community Center across the street. It looks like it could have been a milestone birthday celebration or retirement party. The date on the photo is June 24, 2006.
