But you know what IS still open? Our wonderful park and the walking path. The fresh air will lift up your mood and it's easy to keep your distance from others.

The memorial trees Burton Brandt planted at the park and elsewhere are looking real good. Such a lovely addition that we will be able to see the results from for years to come. Thanks again!

Need something to read??  Since the library is closed, we have set up a “Little Lending Library” in the Community Center entry way.  The books on the shelves on the left are free to take & keep — no need to return.  The books on the shelves on the right can be checked out — To keep it simple, we are on the honor system; take a book, read & return into the box.  Enjoy!!! Thanks Sue Saathoff!

Gordon Hopp received the Barbara Chambers Memorial Award from the North American Bluebird Society at the annual Bluebirds Across Nebraska annual banquet. It can be awarded for work spanning at least two decades of mentoring and educating people of all ages regarding native cavity-nesting bird species, e.g., erecting new nestbox trails, reviving old ones with new monitors; introducing new people to bluebirds, making presentations to youth and adults; working with schools to present programs relating to bluebird and habitat conservation for all native cavity-nesting birds; acting as a liaison or support person for NABS with handling queries or problems bluebirders have on their trails.

Gordon has been encouraging people to help bluebirds since 1996 when he became the Otoe County Co-Coordinator for Bluebirds Across Nebraska. His truck is always filled with bluebird boxes and BAN membership packets. He never misses an opportunity to talk about bluebirds. He has introduced people to bluebirds and signed up many BAN members just by visiting with people in stores, on the street, at church, at Farmers' Markets, fleas markets and even out camping. As County Co-Coordinator, he has mentored folks all across Southeast Nebraska; helping them locate good bluebird habitat and installing boxes. He is always available to answer questions and help solve problems.

For many years, Gordon has been presenting workshops to 4H groups in Otoe and Cass counties. He loves to introduce children to bluebirds and instill in them a love for nature and the outdoors. He not only helps bluebirds but he also monitors wood duck boxes and kestrel boxes. In the last 5 years, he has fledged approximately 300 kestrels and 600 wood ducks.

It's a good thing that Gordon is retired because once spring gets here, his life is bluebirds. He travels in his 4-wheeler many miles a day to get to his 325 boxes in a weeks time. He has been rewarded for his efforts with over 11,000 fledgling bluebirds over the last 5 year. Gordon is truly a bluebird ambassador. Congratulations!!!
