Our condolences to Todd Zahn and family on the passing of his mother, Betty Zahn. She was a delightful and admirable woman.
Well, we survived the "snowstorm", but those below zero temperatures were hard to handle! Our tractor picked a great time to act up...hope it's not taking the winter off!

Continued get well wishes to Cindy Stanley and Lori Boone, and any others under the weather.
A more modified version of Groundhog Day will happen this year and it's coming right up! Watch the Unadilla Bill FB page for current updates! Vote for the King & Queen at the Bank, Nitty Gritty, or send them to the Village Office at PO Box 87. Vote early, vote often!
Thank you to John Stilwell for sharing this information. This summer, Christopher Fill and his team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, conducted the Nebraska North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat). They used 110 individual sampling locations spanning the entire state, and one of those is owned by John. The team indentified 4 species at this location: Big Brown Bat, Eastern Red Bat, Hoary Bat, and Evening Bat.

Big Brown Bat
The Big Brown Bat is found throughout the U.S., and within Nebraska they can be found across the entire state. They primarily feed on beetles and moths including significant crop pests such as cucmber beetles. While most summer roosts are located in attics, barns, and other buildings, during winter they will also hibernate in caves and mines. They can be found in almost all habitat types within North America. Females give birth to one or two pups each spring.

Eastern Red Bat
The Eastern Red Bat isfound in the eastern U.S. and Southern Canada. In Nebraska, they occur across almost the entire state. Unlike most species of bat that only have one pup a year, red bats often give birth to twins and can have litters of up to five young. They primarily feed on moths and are often found flying around flood lights hunting for insects. Red bats will roost in tree branches among foliage. In the fall, this species will migrate south to warmer climates, or hibernate in rtee cavities or leaf litter.

Hoary Bat
The largest bat in Nebraska, the Hoary Bat, is found throughout the U.S. (including Hawaii) and all across Nebraska. They eat flies, beetles, dragonflies, moths, and butterflies. They roost among the leaves on tree branches at the edge of forests and are seldom seen by people. Unlike many bat species that remain year-round in Nebraska, this species will migrate to tropical areas for the winter. Females give birth to two pups each year.

Evening Bat
The Evening Bat is found in the lower eastern part of the U.S. and northern Mexico; within Nebraska it occurs in the southeast region of the state. They eat flying ants, spittle bugs, June beetles, Japanese beetles and moths. They roost in hollow trees, beneath loose bark, and in buildings and attics. They are usually found in forest habitats. Females give birth to one or two pups each year.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 1-6-1922, The Otoe Union:
The average temperature for December 1921 was 32.8 degrees, total precipitation .05". W.N. Pickerill died, born 5-8-1858 in Brown County, Ohio. He married Hattie Smith and his surviving children were: Omar, Will, John, and Sam. "A story is told of a man who recently wrote a will in which he named 6 bankers as his pallbearers. 'They have carried me for 20 years', he explained, 'and they might as well finish the job." The paper included a sale bill for Glen B. White, who was listed as living at Fairview Farm. Any ideas where this was at?
