PATRIOT DAY
9-11-2013

Get well wishes to
Kate Lucas and Marvin Lucas
Janet Lamb Twohig reports: July 30, 2013 through August 6,2013
Dee Lamb returned to Nebraska for a whirlwind of activities.
August 3 was a celebration of her mother, May (Thomson) Lamb's
93rd birthday and previewing of "Ring Papa Ring", a book by
Gary and Dean Thomson. It chronicles the family history from
William Randolph Harrie (he broke/cracked the Liberty Bell),
to current times. All 106 family members met at the Golden Corral
for lunch and the book launch. The next day 30 members of the Lamb
family met at the Unadilla Methodist Church. Dee also got to spend
time with Rachel Newberry, took Korben Twohig-Taylor to Morrill
Hall, and caught up with high school friends. Luckily she was
here during a nice weather break.
Several from the area have attended "The Boys Next Door"
at the Lofte Theatre. It is a sweet and well written statement
on the mentally challanged in our society. All the actors did a
remarkable job, and if you get a chance, it's well worth the
drive to Manley.
We are tired of the hot weather and no rain
at the Western Wilhelm outpost.
Did you know that Weeping Water's annual celebration is
in honor of limestone? Supposedly it got its name after an
Indian battle where so many warriors were killed that
the surviviors cried enough tears to form a river.

New Exhibits and Festival Activities at
Cass County Museum
In conjunction with the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival, Cass County Historical Society has opened a new exhibit “Harvest Memories: Farm Life and Fall Festivals”. The exhibit recalls the 1916 Fall Festival and Kass Kounty King Korn Karnivals from the 1930s to the 1960s. Included are photographs and memorabilia such as ties and souvenir pins. The exhibit will continue through October 27.
Also on view through October 27 is the exhibit “Remembering Beautiful Merritt Beach”. Included are photographs about the recreation area that was located just south of the Platte River on the east side of Highway 75. Merritt Beach was in operation from the 1930s through 1989.
Cass County Museum's regular summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. During the Harvest Festival the museum will open at 10:00 am. on Friday September 6 and Saturday, September 7 and close at 4:00. There will be a used book sale in the courtyard and a pie sale in the museum. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. The Cook log cabin and Burlington Caboose at the end of Main will also be open on September 6 and 7 from noon until 4:00 pm. Cake will be served in honor of the 100th anniversary of the caboose and the 145th anniversary of the cabin.
For additional information about the exhibits or special festival events, contact the museum, 402-296-4770.

Greenblatt & Seay proudly announce the Seventeenth ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE. This historical, hysterical event will take place on Sunday, October 13, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse. In the Open Division, fiddlers will play a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice. There will also be other divisions of competition available for the adventurous fiddlers, including a Singing Fiddler's Contest, a Twin Fiddler's Contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's Contest (fiddle tunes played on any instrument other than a fiddle), and a Hocus-Pocus Contest (cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc.), which will give fiddlers an opportunity to play tunes that are usually not allowed in any other contest. Contestants can register on line (http://www.greenblattandseay.
