May Lamb would like to thank all her family and friends who
remembered her 95th birthday. Due to the heat, the reception
was moved from the covered picnic shelter to the Methodist
Church; there were 78 in attendance. What a great achievement!
Did you know that between 1905 and 1914, vehicle owners made
their own license plates out of leather and then registered them
with the Secretary of State?

Condolences to the family and friends of Howard Hogancamp.
He passed July 19, 2015. A Celebration of Life will he held on
Friday, July 24, 11:00 a.m. at the Talmage Community Center
in Talmage, NE. Farewell old friend.

Wednesday, July 15, Bob and Barb Wilhelm attended the
"First Flight Festival" at UNL's Studio Theatre. New short
plays written by members of the Angels Playwriting Collective
were presented. We especially enjoyed "The Bequest"
written by Cherie Frederick.
Bob Wilhelm would like to remind everyone to stop by the
Bingo stand in the air conditioned Fair Center during
the County Fair next weekend. The proceeds help fund
local youth programs. It's always lots of fun!
The Southeast Health Department, which includes Otoe
County, reports that mosquitos carrying the West Nile
Virus have been found in Richardson County. They remind
us people over 50 have the highest risk of developing a
severe case of this illness. Other things to remember:
get rid of all standing water, wear long sleeves and pants,
use a repellant that contains DEET, and try to avoid
working ourdoors at dusk and dawn.

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 7-23-1915, The Otoe Union:
Rev. Fuqua of Paisley, left to spend his vacation with his
parents. A new light plant was installed in the Christian
Church. O.G. Stoner was elected chairman of the
Chautauqua Board. Barnum & Bailey's "Greatest Show
on Earth" was coming to Lincoln. It required room on the
tracks for 85 double length railroad cars, which carried
1280 people, 700 horses, 40 elephants, and 110 cages
of various exotic animals and birds.
A thought worth remembering:
"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is
the chance to work hard at work worth doing."
-Teddy Roosevelt, 1903.
