Our veteran's organizations remind us to fly an American
flag of any size on September 11, Patriot Day. Honor those
who lost their lives, and their families, and those who are
fighting today, at home and abroad, to preserve our freedom.

Don't forget to call Granny & Gramps this Sunday!
September 13th is Grandparents Day!

Our condolences to the many family and friends of Keith
Liesemeyer, who passed away on 9-4-2015. Keith served for
many years on the Village Board and was a long time
Chairman of the Board. Very civic minded and active in
his church, he was also a proud veteran, serving in the
U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife Linda, daughters
Traci Johnson and Mindy Tuma, and son Kirk. He will be
laid to rest in the Unadilla Cemetery.

Mark your calendars! Groundhog Day is only 6 months
away! See you on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

Bob & I crossed off another item on our "bucket list" Sunday.
Have you been to DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge? The
visitor's center houses amazing displays and includes the
contents of the steamboat Bertrand after it had been
submerged in mud for 109 years.

It gives you a very personal
look at life in 1865 and we were surprised by the exhibit
of "then and now"; items used in everyday life, ketchup,
canned peaches, Worcestershire sauce, etc., the ones
salvaged along side the same product from todays grocery
store.

The Bertrand was headed up the Missouri River to
Ft. Benton, Montana Territory, when it sank and there were
no lives lost. We were also surprised that among the many
items recovered there were 4092 bottles of alcohol. The
taste test revealed it was sour but still contained 40%
alcohol! It was a wonderful afternoon and well worth
the $3 admission!

Looking out of the visitor's center at the Missouri River
The Western Wilhelm Outpost escaped the damage of the
storms Sunday and Monday night and never lost electricity.
Sadly the same can not be said for our neighbors in Syracuse.
Bob was in line at the brush pile with trees from Grandma's
house for nearly 45 minutes. It was so sad to see all the damge.
A big thank you to Tom and Jo Lewis for their generous donation of books for the library. Their donation included many new children's books -- The Backyardigans, Sponge Bob SquarePants, Disney and more. These will be great additions to the huge selection of children's books already on our shelves.
Recommended author for September: Nora Roberts. Nora is a prolific writer having penned well over 150 novels. Her romantic stories are set in varied locations and involve suspense and mystery -- always a good read. Stop in and check her books out!
Library Hours: Thursday -- 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Saturday -- 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
We think Unadilla is a great place to live and did you know
our Main Street in on the National Register of Historic
Places? Many towns and villages had businesses and
homes that sprang up next to the railroad, but Unadilla is
the only town in Nebraska that has a curved Main Street.
The story goes that the street curved to line up with the
railroad, and the railroad curved to align with the
Nemaha River. Consider yourselves unique!

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

Friday, 9-10-1915, The Otoe Union:
Miss Ertle from Nebr. City took charge of School Dist.
#108, Russell Creek School. "Voorhees Edwards of
Chugwater, Wyoming, was visiting his folks in this county
last week, making the trip by auto." Nic Tams and Edgar
Morris were building a 48' X 48' barn for Fred Schmidt,
4 miles north of town. Dr. E.C. Williams sold his practice
to Dr. J. McCallister, Omaha, who would take over
Dr. Williams' office and residence.
