We had some great weather for the Groundhog Celebration again
this year. There were new vendors at the gym and a nice crowd.

Donna Duerksen came from Kansas to find family descendants
of S.T. Lyon & I.P. Taylor
110-120 people attended the presentation "Dust Bowl Descent"
given by Bill Ganzel. We had lots of good feedback from those
in the audience; we are so lucky to receive funding from the
Nebraska Humanities Council and the Unadilla Area Fund
for these annual presentations.

Corey Schulze manned the "trains" all morning in the History
Room and the Veteran's Room also had a lot of traffic.

Christie & Milan Brehm created another wonderful display
of quilts this year. The stories are almost as amazing as the
quilts themselves!
The Library giveaway was a huge hit with the children. Thanks to
Peggy Leefers, Sharon Demaree, Glenda Willnerd, Sue Saathoff,
Larry Larson, Maureen Vogt, Donna Crownover, & Corinne Zahn
and all their helpers for the wonderful jobs they did at the
Community Center and the Duncan Building. If you won a Silent
Auction item, please pick them up as soon as possible. A special
thanks to the Christian Church Circle for providing lunch
at the gym.

Soup, Jerky, and "Best Use of Spam" entries were checked in at the
Duncan Building. Winner of the Chili Soup Division: Steve Cooper;
Veggie Soup Division: Nina Jean Rohlfs; and "Other" Soup Division:
Arlin Rohlfs. Junior Groteian placed first in the Homemade Jerky
Contest, and Beaux Howard got second. In the coveted "Best Use
of Spam" entries there were some unique and surprisingly tasty
entries. First place went to Kevin Rohlfs for "Spam Ruebens" and
second place went to Adam Bassinger for "All Wrapped Up", which
was bacon wrapped Spam in a tasty sauce. What fun these
contests are! Thanks to Aaron Rule, Jason Hurt, Gabe Meints,
Cory Hanke, and Todd Kirshenbaum for judging these. And thanks
to Matt & Michele Capps for organizing this event.
Also at the Duncan Building, the Girl Scouts were selling Groundhog
items, the Nebraska Nut Growers Association had lots of their
products and donated some of them for contest prizes, and the
Boy Scouts provided lunch there. Once again, Nina Rohlfs provided
the lovely music. Bev Wilhelm won the grill and M.K. Meats package,
Denise Moerer won the M.K. Meats gift certificate, and Dave Hall
won the scratch tickets from Nebraska Lottery.

It was around 45 degrees at parade time, and 41 entries, which we
believe is an all time high! There were 400+ in the crowd and it was
spread from Dan's Tire all the way west to the curve. Continuing a
long tradition, the joint American Legion and VFW Color Guard
led the way.
Governor Ricketts and Dan Watermeier joined in the fun and
walked in the parade. There was a 3-way tie for the winner: Girl Scout
Troops 20579 & 21; Cub Scout Pack 337, and the vintage cars of
John Moss & Jason Newby. Thanks to Perry Stoner and Bill Farmer
for their "Master of Ceremonies" duties and to the organizers down
by Dan's Tire for lining everyone up in the right place.

After the parade, the King & Queen coronation was held at The Bar.
It was a tight race among the candidates, but in the end Shirley
Stubbendeck Fensler and Tom Hruby were crowned the new
King & Queen by last year's royal couple, Michele Capps and Kevin
Randall. This contest raised over $2900 for the Fire Dept., Rescue
Squad, and Unadilla Area Fund. We would like to thank everyone
who donated in support of this great cause.

Thanks also to Dwight Kastens and Arlin Rohlfs for cleaning up the
streets and sidewalks, and "sprucing up" in general. Thanks to our
head groundhog, Bob Brandt, and his many helpers. Thanks also
to Bob Wilhelm, Mary Hanke, and Mark Czapla for the photos. If
I've missed anyone, I'm truly sorry. As I say every year, this type of
event "takes a village" and almost everyone in our village
participates in one way or another. Thank you seems hardly
enough, but thank you anyway. We had a great time and we hope

NE, came to finish the school year started by Prof. Morris. A
daughter was born to Sumner Farnsworths'. From the editor:
"And soon, now, the long haired, spindle shanked, short
trousered, eye glassed city youth will be out on the farm again
telling dad how to make a million out of a penny."

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be hosting a special "Schoolhouse Celtic Fiddling Camp", for fiddlers, violists, mandolinists, guitarists, and ukulele players. Music from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales will be featured. The sessions will be led by championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt. Each participant will receive a copy of Deborah's latest publication, the Celtic Fiddler's Song Book.
The camp will be on Wednesday, March 9 - Friday, March 11, from 9 AM to 1 PM. You can sign up for 1 day, or 2 days, or all 3 days.
On Wednesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation. We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords. You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.
On Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets. Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of the day, just in case your ears need the help.
On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.
One day: $60.00
Two days: $110.00 ($55 per day)
Three days: $150.00 fee for 3 days. ($50 per day)

Irish Music Concert
Greenblatt & Seay's Schoolhouse Performance Series features a concert of Irish music on Sunday, March 13, at 2:30 PM, in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse. Greenblatt & Seay & Friends will be singing and playing a variety of instruments, including fiddle, pennywhistle, folk harp, guitar, hammered dulcimer, and recorders. Traditional Irish tunes will be featured, along with some Greenblatt & Seay originals inspired by the great Irish traditions.
Greenblatt & Seay have been playing and singing together since the night they met, decades ago. Their performance on March 13 will include the championship fiddling styles of Deborah Greenblatt, and the fancy whistle-playing of David Seay.
The concert will be downstairs, and followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers. Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990. Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.
